Message from our Principal Mr Fehlhaber
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I write this introduction to you as the new principal of Wynnum State School. I am honoured to become part of the Wynnum community and look forward to working with you in the education of your children. I have been struck by the warm and genuine welcome offered to me by students, staff and community members.
Prior to Wynnum, I have 16 years’ experience as principal, ranging from small to large regional primary schools. My most recent principalship was at Marian State School in Mackay. I have recently spent two years as a School Reviewer for Education Queensland and School Improvement Coach in Metropolitan South Region. On a personal note, I married Anne who is a high school teacher, and we are proud of our three children who each now have their own careers.
One of my first goals here at Wynnum will be building strong relationships with students, staff and families. You will often find me in the classrooms and playgrounds getting to know students and taking an active interest in what and how they are learning. With this in mind, we will maintain our commitment to the strategic priorities of the school:
- Delivering a quality curriculum outcomes through great teaching practice.
- Ensuring a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment through our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) strategies.
- Focusing on the wellbeing needs of students and staff to provide the foundation for engagement in learning.
I welcome your ideas and input and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout the term.
Vale Declan Phillips
Many of you will be aware of the tragic passing of former WSS student, Declan Phillips. Declan’s brother, Ryan is in Year 5 at our school.
On behalf of the Wynnum State School community, we have been in contact with the Phillips family to pass on our deepest condolences and to ensure them of our support for Ryan on his return to school.
This week we have engaged a regional senior guidance officer to assist Ms Manning our guidance officer in supporting any needs of students and staff at this time. Please contact the school if your student requires any support as they process this news.
School Opinion Survey
The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinions about our school from families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11). The surveys will help identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. The survey invitation will be emailed in the week beginning 21 July and is titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey. The survey is anonymous, and the results are not reported in ways that an individual’s response can be identified by the school. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with an internet connection. For Parents/Caregivers who do not have access to the internet school computers/tablets will be available. Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au. It’s important that as many parents/caregivers as possible complete the survey, so we would appreciate if members of this committee would raise awareness of this survey with other parents and caregivers. Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.

We are respectful when we are quick, quiet and clean in the toilets 🌟
This fortnight, we’re reinforcing positive behaviours in our school toilets. Let’s work together to keep our shared spaces safe, tidy, and respectful for everyone! 💧🧼👏

P-3 Science with Mrs Crowe
It certainly will be an exciting term ahead for our Junior Wynnum Warriors. Young meteorologists, climatologists, hydrologists and astronomists will investigate changes on their earth, and phenomena in space, throughout P-3 ‘Earth and Space Sciences’ Investigations during Term Three:
Prep - ‘Weather in our World’ (Identifying Weather Patterns)
Year One - ‘Changes All Around’ (Seasonal and Environmental Changes)
Year Two - ‘Water Works’ (The Water Cycle)
Year Three - ‘Night and Day’ (Sun, Earth and Moon Cycles)
National Tree Day is this Sunday 27 July. Schools Tree Day is celebrated this Friday 25th July 2025. There will be an interactive display, with planting experiences, outside the Junior Science Lab. Tree Day is a great way to inspire students to learn about their local environment while playing an active role in their community. Local community events will be happening that you may wish to become involved in with your children. Activities range from planting bush tucker gardens, building habitat for native wildlife, nature play and community plantings. https://nationaltreeday.org.au/
Later this term we will celebrate National Science Week. This is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. The 2025 school theme will be ‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language’. https://www.scienceweek.net.au/
Look up, look around and discover science happening in your world every day. Welcome back everyone!

Sports Report with Mr. Blair - PE Teacher
Congratulations to the following students who have qualified to compete at the district athletics carnival:
-Sienna S, Chloe G, Sienna S, Cooper O’D, Memphis W, Keeyo S, Ari H, Michael L, Lena W, Lennox C, Riley T
Events that students qualified for include long jump, high jump, 100m, 200m and 800m. The carnival will be held on the 7th and 8th of August, and we wish them all the best. Distances, heights and times were all very tough to qualify for so it’s a great achievement to even make it to this level. I am positive they will do themselves and the school proud as Wynnum warriors.
Year 5 Passion Learning
Wow! What a turn out during the last week of Term 2. Parents, family and friends celebrated the students’ presentations as they became the audience for the Year 5 Passion Learning Extravaganza on Wednesday 18 June.
As part of our Year 5 Wisdom Wednesdays, the students have been on a learning journey within the Yr 5 Health curriculum which focuses on student well-being and self-reflection. The Yr 5 teaching team facilitated self-directed learning, creativity and discovery within a broad set of guidelines that encouraged the students to incorporate their own interests, their passions.
Passion learning has been about choices and decision making. It is a rich, authentic, student led learning process of RESEARCHING, CREATING AND PRESENTING.
Once students selected their passion, they developed a driving question. These inquiry questions became the focus of the research stage. The topics for Passion Learning are inherently personalised for each student. Students were asked to make decisions and choices about the people, places and tools that would best support their learning each week as they planned for each session and recorded what they were able to achieve.
At the creating stage, students were required to make decisions about how they would share their learning. Their creations were then presented at the Passion Learning Extravaganza. The students proudly shared their artwork, constructions, baked goods, PowerPoints, dancing, posters, recipe books, sewing, sports skills and videos. The learning talk between students and adults added to the buzz of the day. Students were then asked to reflect on what they discovered about themselves as a learner and what they could do to further support their personal growth and well-being.
Thank you to all the family and friends who contributed towards this successful learning journey.

Guidance Officer Message with Nathaly Manning
Dear Families,
Welcome back to Term 3. I trust that you’ve all had a relaxing and rejuvenating break.
Our school community is feeling the weight of a deeply sad event – the heartbreaking loss of a young life. While we hold those directly affected in our hearts, we are also reminded of the importance of compassion, connection, and care within our school and the broader community.
At times like this, our children may feel a range of emotions, even if they did not know the family personally. They might have questions, feel unsettled, or simply be more sensitive than usual. If you feel your child has been affected in any way, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their classroom teacher. They can assist with a referral to the Guidance Officer, where support is available to help them process what they’re feeling in a safe and caring space
Now more than ever, let’s look out for one another and continue to support each other with kindness and understanding as we move through this time together.
As always, below are some services to keep in your contact list should you need support at home:
- Police / Ambulance – 000 (emergency)

CIRCLE OF SECURITY PARENTING (COSP™) PROGRAM – TERM 3, 2025
As parents do you ever struggle with managing challenging behaviour, big emotions and trying to figure out what your child really needs? Do you ask yourself are positive or negative reinforcements, rewards, punishments or consequences actually working? Or do you ever feel overwhelmed, judged and guilty for feeling not good enough?
We are excited to offer parents and caregivers a free opportunity to join the Circle of Security Parenting (COSP™) Program – a supportive and practical course designed to strengthen your relationship with your child.
This internationally acclaimed program helps parents better understand their child’s emotional needs, manage challenging behaviours, and build secure, healthy connections. Whether you're parenting toddlers or teens, the Circle of Security provides tools that make a lasting difference.
Spaces are limited – please contact your child/s class teacher to register your interest. Once you have registered someone from our well-being team will be in contact with you and provide more details.
Let’s work together to support stronger families and confident, connected kids!

100 Days of Prep

In the first week of Term 3, our Preps celebrated their 100 days of learning. During first break the Preps had the opportunity to play games with the Student Council. Games such as hopscotch, duck duck goose, musical statues and What’s the Time Mr Wolf.
