Message from the Acting Principal Ms Connell
Thank you to everyone who has helped keep WSS 'sailing smoothly' over the last four weeks. We have been Respectful, Responsible and Safe and taken care of one another.
I have found that people make a point of sharing appreciation for many things with the principal, including appreciation for our dedicated staff and our beautiful school grounds. In all sincerity, I also appreciate the families who have respectfully raised concerns. As much as I love our school, there is no perfect school and when issues arise, we want to know so we can work towards a resolution.
It has been a pleasure to be part of so many special school events, including last week’s Mother’s Day stalls. These were wonderfully organised and run by our P&C, parent volunteers and student counsellors. I hope all the mums and special people were as excited to receive the gifts as the students were to select and buy them.
I know we all look forward to Dr Ionn’s return next week and sharing in the stories of his adventures.
PBL Focus Week 3&4
Wynnum State School’s weeks 3 & 4 PBL focus is ‘we are responsible when we follow instructions.’

Prep - Year 3 Celebration of Learning

University Research Project
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Our research team from the University of Queensland is looking for children aged between 10 and 13 years to participate in our project.
We are interested in young people's perspective on screen time and would like to hear their thoughts and wishes for screentime use in everyday life as a young person.
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, please find more information in the flyer attached or follow the link to our website https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/screentime/.
We would be happy to welcome you to the project.
Kind regards
Verena Fuss
(Research team of the University of Queensland)

Library Matters with Mrs Sutton & The Library Team

It is only four weeks to go until our WSS Year 5 & 6 Readers’ Cup team compete in the 2025 regional Bayside competition. Run by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, the competition is open to state and private schools and will be held on Monday 19th June at Manly State School. This year we are entering two teams from Years 5 and 6. I look forward to introducing the team in our next newsletter. These students are currently reading through the five selected books that will be the focus of questioning on the night

Some great reading ahead in Issue 4 of the Scholastic Book Club. You have until 11th June for orders to be completed.
Just keep reading…
P-2 Science with Mrs Crowe
Chemical Science challenge for Year One this week was to work interdependently, in groups of three, to build ‘Spaghetti and Marshmallow Towers’ (not as easy as it sounds!).
Questioning, problem solving, creating, imagining and innovating together was very evident as each group manipulated the tricky materials to produce their tower. Even if the tower did not eventually stand up, each group learned that persistence is so important for success. Expressions of ‘Wonderment and Awe’ echoed from the Science Lab when the towers were successful! Enjoy these photos of accomplishment!
From this term every class from P-3 will be able to work towards earning the privilege of having the “Junior Science Warriors Award” to keep in their classroom. The trophy is awarded at assemblies each fortnight. Each class has to display the fortnightly ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’ focus to win the award to keep in their classroom for a fortnight. The trophy is a golden microscope!

Sports Report with Mr Blair (PE teacher)
We have had some trials recently for Bayside district school sport and I appreciate everyone’s cooperation in ensuring students who are nominated make it to their trial. The best Facebook page for last minute updates is Bayside District School Sport.

Free Dress Day - National Simultaneous Storytime
Year 5 Overboard & Underwater Excursion
Our unique Moreton Bay provided the perfect learning space for our Year 5 students this week. Connecting to the HASS curriculum, students adopted the role of Environmental Managers to investigate how our local marine environment is impacted by human activity. In small groups, the Year 5s explored the Manly foreshore annotating maps, documenting the land use and activities conducted in the area, and recording the possible pathways for the movement rubbish. Conducting the Tangaroa Blue rubbish audit at Bayside Park, students investigated different types of rubbish in the area. The collected data, contributes to an ongoing data base for the Australian Marine Debris Initiative. Unfortunately, cigarette butts and plastic packaging were the most frequently collected rubbish. While aboard the Inspiration, students participated in a marine sediment grab. Viewing the sieved sediment under microscopes revealed an array of benthic organisms, which were identified with the use of IPad images. We discovered microplastics in our sediment grab! We had to propose and evaluate management strategies and recommend ways to minimise marine debris. Our learning journey continues as we investigate the world’s plastic problem, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the challenging task of considering future solutions to ensure our marine habitats are conserved for the future.

Late Arrivals
As the term progresses, we’d like to highlight the importance of arriving at school on time. Punctuality helps students start their day prepared and allows them to feel more settled and connected with their peers and classroom routines. Our school day begins promptly at 8:45am, and any student arriving after the bell must sign in at the office for safety and attendance purposes. We understand that mornings can sometimes be challenging, and we appreciate your efforts in helping your child build strong routines and a sense of responsibility. If you’re experiencing any difficulties that make regular on-time arrival challenging, please send an email to your child’s classroom teacher.
No Consent or Payment = No Participation
We would like to remind all families of Wynnum State School’s policy regarding student participation in excursions, incursions, camps, sporting activities & musical activities.
In line with Department of Education guidelines, students will only be permitted to attend these activities if both consent and full payment have been received by the due date.
Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made. This means that if consent is not provided or payment is not made by the specified deadline, your child will not be able to participate in the activity.
This policy ensures the safety, planning, and fairness for all students and staff. We encourage families to ensure that all necessary consent forms have been completed, and payments have been received. Should you require any assistance or have questions, we encourage you to contact us at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
