Acting Principal's Message with Ms Connell
With Mr Ionn presenting his doctoral research to an international conference in Melbourne, I have jumped at the chance to add a quick message to this edition of the newsletter. I cannot remember a more positive start to a school year than we have experienced this year at WSS. The sun has been shining, the music has been playing, and the Adventure Playground is full every day. Classroom, specialist and support teachers have extensively planned and are bringing the curriculum to life with engaging and differentiated lessons. Our Wynnum Warriors are coming every day full of curiosity and a willingness to learn tricky new things. That hundreds of students, staff and families have settled so quickly and calmly back into school life, speaks clearly about the caring and positive relationships that we have. While celebrating our community and our great start, I acknowledge that the year to come won't only be sunny days, dancing and happiness. With your help, I look forward to having school problems being given the opportunity to be solved at school and continuing to work together when we need to. Looking forward to seeing you around the school, and don't forget the first P&C meeting for the year is coming up next week.

Library Matters with Mrs Sutton & The Library Team

We are excited to be back!
All classes are off and running with their scheduled weekly library borrowing times. Library staff will be informing all students of our expectations in the library during this time.
Preps, Years 1 & 2 students are required to bring their library bags to transport our precious books to home and back. Help your child keep their library books in good condition and store away from food and drink especially in their school bags.
Please learn your child’s library day and encourage them to return the book weekly, so they can always share those books amongst all students. And yes, what is currently our most popular take home book for our Year 1 & 2 students…Minecraft it is!!!
Thank you again to the many families donating such quality pre-loved books to boost our library shelves. We love hearing that you have had a ‘Marie Kondo’ declutter because your books certainly spark joy for our avid readers at WSS.

Queensland Library Week is celebrated this week and our library has been a hub of all things reading, games, making and interacting with friends. A zillion thank yous, Ms Sellars, for all you accomplish everyday in our library working with students, staff and parents. Mrs Lakeman, thank you for being on our library team too, especially coordinating ‘Scholastic’ book orders each month. And Mr Jon (Saker) who manages to solve all things IT. Again, big thanks.
Our fantastic library and IT team look forward to the year ahead.
Just keep reading…
P-2 Science with Mrs Crowe
Tuesday, 11th February was ‘International Women and Girls in Science Day’. The Junior Science Lab was overflowing with highly interested female scientists!
Mrs Crowe (P-3 Science) and Mrs Brooks (Year 4-6 Science) were very impressed with all the girls that visited the Lab for this special event. So many in-depth conversations occurred around the investigations of scientific concepts.
The girls used authentic equipment including microscopes, magnifying glasses, circuit kits, all of which prompted much prediction and problem solving.
Natural and preserved specimens of animal skulls, insects and bird nests, life cycle models, butterfly chrysalis and zebra finches with eggs were all investigated with an amazing amount of Wonderment and Awe! Enjoy these photos!

‘Clean Up Australia Day for Schools’ is being held on Friday 28th February. All classes will be involved in cleaning up an area of the school. Follow-up activities will reinforce the importance of keeping our world clean.
World Science Festival Brisbane is nearly here (21-30 March)! Presale for ticketed events is now open. There are many free events to book! This is a fantastic family event for all ages. Click this link to see the range of enthralling events to book and to check out all the science events coming up in March for you and your family. https://worldsciencefestival.com.au/

Sports Report with Mr Blair (PE teacher)
Congratulations to Mavryx M and Abel K who have been selected into the Tamariki tour held in New Zealand which is a Maori touch football competition. The tournament is on from the 15th to 16th February. “The tour will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills as well as an inspiring cultural exchange gaining valuable knowledge and experiences (tour co-ordinator).” We wish them all the best.
Also, congratulations extend to the following students who qualified for district swimming trials which is on the 20th of February: Lena W, Lola B, Emily P, Elissa C, Jack H.
We wish them all the best as they swim in their differing strokes wearing our Wynnum state school swim cap as a team. They have already done us proud by simply qualifying from tough times.
2025 District Sport Information:
Please find information regarding the 2025 District and Regional Sporting Calendar.

Uniform Reminder
Dear Wynnum SS Parents/Carers
The 2025 school year has commenced and we are so pleased to see our Wynnum Warriors back on school grounds, ready to engage in learning and fun!
We are writing to remind all families about the importance of adhering to the school's uniform policy. As you know, our school has a clear and consistent dress code designed to promote a sense of community, equality, and pride among our students.
Wearing the school uniform is essential for several reasons:
1. Encourages a Sense of Belonging
2. Promotes Equality
3. Supports a Positive Learning Environment
4. Enhances School Identity
We ask that all students come to school dressed in the appropriate uniform each day. Please take a moment to check your child’s uniform and ensure it complies with the guidelines below.
To assist with the purchase of uniform items, the uniform shop is open weekly during term time on the following days:
Tuesday: 8:30am to 9:30am and Thursday: 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Online ordering via Munch Monitor is also available.
If there are any difficulties in obtaining the required uniform, please do not hesitate to reach out to us so that we can offer support.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and for helping us maintain a respectful and focused learning environment. We greatly appreciate your understanding and partnership in this matter.
Kind Regards

Car Park Safety & Stop, Drop, and Go Etiquette
To ensure the safety of all students, parents, and staff, we kindly remind families to follow these important car park rules:
🚗 Use the Stop, Drop, and Go Zone Correctly: This area is for quick drop-offs and pick-ups only. Drivers must stay in their vehicles and move forward promptly to keep traffic flowing.
🚶♂️ Use Designated Crosswalks: Always walk your child to and from the car park using marked crossings.
🛑 No Parking in Drop-Off Zones: If you need to exit your vehicle, please park in the designated parking areas.
🚦 Be Patient and Follow the Signs: Drive slowly, watch for pedestrians, and follow all posted signs and staff instructions.
👀 Be Mindful of Children and Other Vehicles: Small children can be difficult to see, and cars may be moving in all directions. Stay alert, check your surroundings, and always double-check before reversing.
By working together, we can ensure a safe and smooth drop-off and pick-up experience for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation!
