Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
Colour Run
I want to congratulate the Wynnum State School P&C on a most successful Fun Colour Run for 2024.
What a great afternoon! The feedback has been amazing from our warriors and families. The school is highly aware of the time, energy and investment that went into creating a ‘home grown’ fun run for us all. Congratulations and very well done.
Happy Tuckshop Day
Each year Tuckshop Day is our opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of our school’s tuckshop staff and volunteers.
We invite you to join us in showing your appreciation for these important members of our school community.
Thanks to all of our tuckshop staff and volunteers for your hard work, dedication and contribution. You play such an important role in supporting students’ development and wellbeing we really appreciate all you do!
Term 4 – Extra Week
This year, we have an 11-week term, that means we will finish our year slightly later than previous years. This has been portrayed in the media as week 41
Every state school will remain open for students until the end of the school year, including week 41. In the final week of school, although there will not be any new learning, we will be here to focus on student engagement, cultural and wellbeing activities through alternative arrangements. This will look similar to other years in relation to a final week. For our Year 6 students, the week signifies activities based around our immersion program for example.
Get Ready for 2025
Start planning for next year with the 2025 school calendar now available via http://www.education.qld.gov.au/about-us/calendar
The calendar features school term dates, school holiday dates, public holidays and staff development/student free days.
If you’re looking for more room to write, check out the 2025 school planner which is now bigger and better at A3 size per term and notes each term week.
iCalendar updates will follow later in the year.
2025 Enrolment Confirmation
Enrolment numbers determine school funding, including how many teachers we have. This is why it is imperative that if your child/children are NOT going to be attending WSS in 2025, please notify the front office ASAP. Also, if you have a Preppie for next year, please let us know, so the enrolment process can be completed, and your little Wynnum Warrior can come along to the Prep Transition Sessions and Meet the Teacher sessions!
Save the Date!
Please refer to the Term 4 calendar below. Please note that some events may be subject to change. We recommend regularly checking our newsletters and Facebook updates for any revisions.

Library Matters with Mrs Sutton & The Library Team
Shortly we will be distributing the very last and exciting issue of Scholastic Book Club, No 8. Great books and gifts for reading through the summer holidays and festive season!
Being the last issue for the year, we ask our families to place their orders on time, through your usual method of ordering. Mrs Lakeman will be placing the orders promptly, so we receive our books in good time before the end of the school year. Please mark if books are gifts, so your book orders can be held back for parents to pick up from the library.
Students can still borrow books up to Week 8 before we will be asking for all library books to be returned for stocktaking. So, until then please encourage your child to enjoy taking home a good read.
Just keep reading Wynnum Warriors…
P-2 Science with Mrs Crowe
“Good vibrations” were felt through all bodies and brains as Year One physicists used a variety of musical instruments to investigate the vibration of different sounds. This science lesson was beautifully followed up as classes experienced the fantastic sound vibrations from the Wynnum High School Orchestra presentation. These photos show the great vibrations and absolute engagement created by using musical instruments in the Junior Science Lab!
Year Two investigated the buoyancy force of water, feeling the upthrust and resistance that occurs when you try to push a ball under water. Our scientists also tested their own predictions of this force on different items when placed in water. So much excitement and perseverance when they changed the shape of a plasticine ball to finally stop it from sinking and make it float!
English in 5/6HC: Exploring 'Black Cockatoo'
This term, 5/6HC students have been diving into Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler, a story that delicately explores the themes of standing up for oneself, honouring cultural roots, and celebrating the strength of family connections. Through this powerful narrative, students have analysed the characterisation, themes, and plot development, gaining a deeper understanding of how these elements shape the story.
The main task has been to create a podcast episode designed for future Year 5/6 Wynnum State School students. In these episodes, students share their personal insights on the text, responding to questions and discussing their views on the themes of resilience and cultural identity. The photos capture students drafting responses, engaging with peers' questions, and designing their very own podcast covers—an exciting way to bring their reflections to life!
Eureka! Year 5 Excursion
Taking a step back in time to the 1850s, the Year 5 students ventured onto the Eureka goldfields to experience a little part of Australia’s colonial history. As ‘new chums’ on the goldfields, they were faced with the long trek into town only to be bailed up by the local bushranger! Despite the lunch robbery, the new chums remained in good spirits knowing that Trooper Darren was on duty and had the evidence (smuggled gold and Alex’s lunch) to hold Mr K to account.
The new chums got to explore the township before the hard work began. Haggling for supplies at the local store, pitching their tents on site and staking their claim on the goldfields was all part of the hot, busy day. Gold was hard to come by though. The diggers tried their hand at gold panning, after sieving the dirt through wooden cradles. Some diggers even landed alluvial gold for their efforts. Hot damper from coals of the local bakery fires hit the spot at lunch time. Golden syrup, poured freely, topped it off.
But the sun was still up and the ‘new chums’ had gold fever! They ventured to the Assayer’s Office to purchase their ‘Gold Licence’ for 30 shillings, before hitting the goldfields once again. This time they had gold nuggets in their line of sight and once again they had to haggle for a fair price. Archer K seemed to be the most successful miner of the day, landing himself a pocket full of pound notes after cashing in his gold nuggets. As the day ended, the diggers hit the road again and made their long trek home, hopefully with a new empathy and understanding of the ‘hard life’ many faced during these colonial times.
