Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
Welcome Back
It was great to see our students returning to school with big smiles after the spring break. We are looking forward to a busy yet rewarding term with many events on the agenda.
Farewelling Tanara Turvey
Wynnum State School farewelled our friend and colleague Tanara Turvey at her service this week.
The school appreciated the high level of support and messaging from community partners in our P&C, PCYC, school community and other community groups during this time.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of staff that remained at school on Wednesday, many doing additional duties. We had great support from our cluster schools in both pledges of support and providing teachers and other staff members. This level of collegiality and support enabled close to 40 staff members being able to attend Tanara's Service. Staff provided a guard of honour as a mark of respect and acknowledgement.
Always in our hearts.
One More Term Year 6
The final term for our Year 6 students will be a mixture of excitement and sadness as they prepare to farewell their primary years. I know they will continue to be the role models they have generally been all year, as they make the most of the opportunities provided this term. I am looking forward to celebrating their success.
2025 Enrolment Confirmation
Enrolment numbers determine school funding, including how many teachers we have. This is why it is imperative that if your child/children are NOT going to be attending WSS in 2025, please notify the front office ASAP. Also, if you have a Preppie for next year, please let us know, so the enrolment process can be completed, and your little Wynnum Warrior can come along to the Prep Transition Sessions and Meet the Teacher sessions!

Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Brisbane City Council Libraries Gold Star Reading Club
Children across the city will discover the joys of reading when the Gold Star Reading Club program commences in Council libraries on Saturday 5 October 2024.
The Gold Star Reading Club is designed to encourage and develop reading and literacy skills in children.
There are four great reasons for children to get involved in the 2024 Gold Star Reading Club.
- Membership to the Gold Star Reading Club is FREE!
- The Gold Star Reading Club can help children improve their reading and literacy skills.
- Children will be rewarded for their reading efforts with a medallion and certificate of achievement.
- It’s FUN! Children will have fun sharing their reading experiences with family and friends.
How the program works – it’s easy and free!
- The Gold Star Reading Club is a 6-week program for children aged 6-12 years.
- From 5 October 2024, register for the Gold Star Reading Club online at brisbane.qld.gov.au/libraries or at your local library. Your child must be a library member to join Gold Star – signing up for library membership only takes a couple of minutes and is free. Each child’s parent or guardian must bring photo identification or proof of signature and proof of their address to any Council library, and you and your child can become library members in a matter of minutes. It’s that easy.
- From 5 October 2024, Gold Star members can visit their local library to collect a Gold Star Reading Club reading tracker that features a ‘book stack’ progress chart.
- By reading for just 10 minutes each day, completing as many books as you can and colouring in one book for each book read on your reading tracker, you will earn a medallion and certificate of achievement to be awarded at your local Gold Star Reading Club awards ceremony.
For more information about the Gold Star Reading Club, visit your local library or call Council on (07) 3403 8888.
P-2 Science with Mrs Crowe
Welcome back to our final term for 2024! Next Tuesday 8 October is the 134th annual celebration of “International Arbour Day”. This is traditionally a day for celebrating and planting trees and to educate students about the importance of trees. Arbour Day is a great day to follow up our learning from “National Tree Day” held in Australia every July. P-2 Scientists will engage in further study of trees and planting experiences.
Term Four will be an investigation of the concepts of Physical Sciences. Every time our young scientists visit the Science Lab they will be immersed in the wonders of movement and forces in our world!
Prep: On the Move (Physical movement of objects and body)
Year One: Look, Listen (Sensing Light and Sound)
Year Two: Push and Pull (Force and Gravity)
Sports Report with Mr. Blair
Swimming has started during Physical Education Lessons, and I want to thank Rachel, Elliot and Jemima from Bayside Swim School who will be working with me this term. We have been lucky with some sunny days to start the term off.
Thank you to the WSS community for your cooperation to start swimming during week 1 and allowing as much teaching/ practicing in as possible before the swimming carnivals, which are tentatively scheduled on the 21st and 28th November. More details to come.
We are approaching Nedd Brockmann’s Uncomfortable Challenge this month and some inspiring teachers, along with our students, have already pledged their own challenge. Kudos is contagious and I hope that our teachers inspire you as they have me.
The next run club date is scheduled for Thursday 10th October. A circuit with obstacles will be set up on the oval from 8am-class time. All ages are welcome!

A couple of new things this season;
- Swimlynx has been updated a bit this year, with a slightly revised look and its also a bit faster. There is a "resources" section on the page that has useful info about the club that you can see when you login. At the moment is has the season flyer, club handbook and also instructions for how to be a lane timer. We hope to expand the resources available there through the season.
- We have new lane timing gear. 🎉HOORAY. The old clunky timers have been replaced by a simple app browser based app on your own phone. This should remove most of the tech problems we had towards the end of last season. To help be a timer each Friday night, just bring your phone and we will set you up on the night
- Online volunteer signup forms to help plan - We are encouraging more parents/guardians to give it go and volunteer at the canteen, marshalling lane timing. We are trialling a simple online volunteer form so you can pre-plan when you can volunteer to help in the canteen, lane timing or mashalling. We need those volunteers each night or we can't run the races, so the form should help you plan out when you can volunteer.
