Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
Week 8! It is amazing to think that there are only two weeks remaining of the second school term for this year. A huge thank you for the ongoing support we have received up to this point that has ensured students at our school have once again achieved fabulous results in academics, sport, the arts and community pathways.
PBL Update
As part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) journey, and a major component of our improvement priorities, the PBL committee has undertaken a process to review and refine our school community rules in order to prepare for the 2025 implementation phase. Having clarity over a small number of rules is an important feature for all members of our community to know and respond to ways of being in our school. A representational survey of staff, student leaders and P&C members all had input into this work. Keep an eye out for the results and the final decision to be communicated at the next P&C meeting and to all in the next newsletter.
Evacuation Drill
On Wednesday, we held an Evacuation Drill during the morning session. These drills are a necessary part of the Workplace Health and Safety requirements in state schools. Conducting the drill is an informative process for us, as we are able to see what is working well, and what needs improving. This helps to ensure a smooth process in the event of needing a ‘genuine’ evacuation. Wednesday’s drill went smoothly and the children did a great job of remembering what was required of them.
Save the date!
Make sure to mark your calendars for the exciting upcoming events at Wynnum State School. Stay tuned for more information, which will be shared through our school's Facebook page and in our week 8 newsletter. We look forward to seeing you all there!
Prep - 3 Celebration of Learning Timetable
Get ready to mark your calendars—it's that time of year again!
Our Prep to Year 3 students are thrilled to present their first semester achievements through creative performances. Families, you're all invited to join us in celebrating the progress and talent of our Wynnum Warriors. 2025 Prep Enrolments Now Open
Updating Details
We kindly request that you inform the school of any changes to your contact details. You can update your details by emailing admin@wynnumss.eq.edu.au or by calling 3893 5111. It is important to keep us updated with your current phone numbers, email addresses, and residential addresses to ensure effective communication and timely delivery of important updates and information. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain accurate records.
Afternoon pick up process
Friendly reminder that in the afternoon, parents are kindly requested to wait at the front gate (drop-off/pick-up zone) or MEGA Central. If you are picking up your child from the back gate, please wait outside the school grounds until the 2:45 PM bell rings. Waiting near classrooms before the bell can distract students during their learning time. Thank you for your cooperation.
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
During National Reconciliation Week our students from Prep to Year 2 listened to and responded to the wonderful story called, ‘No Way Yirrikipayi!’ This is the story of a hungry crocodile that goes searching for food on Melville Island. Along the way he encounters both land and sea animals. The children from Milikapiti School, on Melville Island with Australian author and illustrator, Alison Lester wrote this story in both Tiwi and English.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aol1JOa1rBo
Please enjoy Nina Black an elder from the Melville Islands reading the story that accompanies a video created by the school children from the island.
Our Year One students have been reading and retelling the story about the legend of Tiddalik an important story of the Dreamtime. The story of Tiddalik the Frog, helps to teach children the importance of our environment and the preciousness of our water resources. To share and not be greedy or selfish. Thank you P/1BC for your creative writing and drawings depicting Tiddalik.
Readers’ Cup Challenge Update…only three more sleeps before our very well-prepared Year 6 team - Emily, Evie, Clara, Charlie and Mila contest alongside other schools in our region, for the highly prized Reader’s Cup. This year the event is being held at Victoria Point SS on Monday the 10th of June. Our Mrs Lakeman will be on the judging panel again this year too. We wish our warriors well and look forward to sharing news of their experience in the next newsletter.
As we head to the end of Term 2, can I ask all families to continue to regularly return books by their due date, in order for those books to be shared with students waiting eagerly to borrow for the holidays. If you are struggling to find your book, please let the library know and we can work out the next step before invoices are sent early in Term 3.
Just keep reading…
P-2 Science and Technology with Mrs Crowe
Our eager Prep scientists worked carefully to construct “Waterproof Wonders”. Each Prep created a diagram displaying the waterproof materials they would use in their final product. Enjoy these photos of some of the very clever “Waterproof Wonders”!
WORLD BEE DAY at WSS was an absolutely wonderful celebration of the spirit of our young Wynnum Warriors, displaying their deep interest in scientific investigation and their love of BEES!
Our P-2 Science Lab BUZZED all day with true Wonderment and Awe, as classes explored the myriad of hands-on experiences, to learn about both Australian native bees and European honey bees!
Questioning and Gathering Data through all Senses occurred at every BEE station. Our Preps, in their gorgeous hand-made bee hats, to Year Two entomologists tasted a range of honey from the local area (Thank you to one of our teachers, Mrs. Aitchison aka Bee Lady). All visitors observed authentic native bee equipment, investigated First Nations people’s ways of finding and using ‘Sugarbag’ honey, and engaged in Bee related educational puzzles, games, books and coding with Bee bots.
Interested students from Years 3-6 joined in during the breaks to enjoy learning more about the importance of Bees for our survival. Please click on the below Power Point to view photos from World Bee Day 2024!
