Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
It has been a very busy and productive period over the last two weeks. Many items in this edition speak to the high number of individuals and groups who demonstrate the Wynnum pride and commitment to excellence. As we continue to celebrate the dedication and hard work of our school community, I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on a group of individuals who are truly the unsung heroes of our educational journey: our volunteers.
Volunteers are essential for our school. They contribute countless hours of their time, energy, and expertise to support our students, teachers, and staff in various capacities. Whether it's organising events or volunteering in P&C and/or school activities, their contributions are invaluable and deeply appreciated.
Among these dedicated volunteers, I would like to extend a special acknowledgment to our Parent and Community (P&C) executive team. This group of individuals plays a pivotal role in shaping the school community partnership. Their tireless efforts and commitment to excellence have a far-reaching impact on our school community.
The P&C executive team works collaboratively with school administration, teachers, and parents to identify areas where support is needed most. They spearhead fundraising initiatives, attracting funds through grants, and provide valuable feedback on school policies and initiatives. Their leadership, passion, and vision are instrumental in fostering a positive and inclusive school culture where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
In addition to our P&C executive team, I want to extend a special acknowledgment to all the parents who generously volunteer their time and talents to organise and support various school events throughout the year. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and unwavering support enrich the lives of our students and bring our school community closer together.
The success of events like our recent Mother's Day stall is a testament to the power of collaboration and collective action. It is heartening to see parents, teachers, and students come together to create memorable experiences and celebrate the spirit of community. Your dedication and generosity not only make these events possible, but also create lasting memories that enrich the fabric of our school community.
Reporting Semester 1
The curriculum, assessment and reporting framework (P–12 Framework) specifies the curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements for all Queensland state schools’ principals and staff delivering the curriculum from Prep to Year 12. Schools are now afforded options for how they deliver the volume of comments on semester reports. After a significant consultation process of parents and teachers, the Semester 1 reports will outline the levels of achievement A-E for each subject. However, the subject areas will not contain comments. Teachers voted to continue to write an overall comment and a new behaviour comment that reflects our Code of Conduct.
Teachers also voted to bring the parent teacher interview process earlier in Term 3, to speak to the report in Semester 1, with a focus on the next steps. This brings the report and the interview together to add value to our reporting framework.
National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is an annual day of remembrance held on 26 May. The purpose of the day is to recognise and reflect upon the mistreatment of the First Nations peoples of Australia since the arrival of Europeans in 1788. In particular, we remember a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples known as the ‘Stolen Generations’.
On the 26th of May 1997, a report called Bringing Them Home was tabled in Parliament.
National Sorry Day is a yearly opportunity for all Australians to reflect upon past mistakes and learn more about the current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. It also gives Australians a chance to outwardly show their commitment towards reconciliation.
To show our commitment and the work yet still to be done, I attended the National Sorry Day event at Breakwater Park in Wynnum with both Bajara Captains Cooper and Khian. Moreover, the significance of this day and reconciliation week is reflected in the incorporations of First Nations perspectives in the delivery of the Australian Curriculum across all year levels.
Save the date!

Important School Day Reminders for Parents and Guardians
Friendly reminder that our school day starts promptly at 8:45 AM and ends at 2:45 PM. Ensuring punctual arrival is essential for students to fully engage in their educational journey. If you anticipate your child will be arriving after 8:45 AM, kindly direct them to the administrative building to obtain a late arrival slip. Should you foresee any delays in school pick-up, please notify the school office by dialing 3893-5111 prior to 2pm. This will help ensure that the message is relayed to the classroom teacher before the students are released. Your cooperation greatly contributes to upholding a seamless and productive school day.
Winter Preparation
As we transition into the colder months, it's important to ensure that your child's belongings are properly labelled, particularly their school jumpers. Writing your child's name on these items can greatly reduce the chances of them being misplaced or lost. Additionally, we encourage students to regularly check the lost property area for any items they may have misplaced. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a sense of accountability and care for personal belongings.
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Thank you, Wynnum Warriors, for embracing the blue theme for dress up day on Wednesday to celebrate the National Simultaneous reading of the story, Bowerbird Blues, by Australian author and illustrator, Aura Parker. Just after morning tea our students settled in, along with another 2 341 490 students around Australia in over 2 100 locations to hear the author Aura Parker, read her book from the Green Square Library in Sydney. Some classes enjoyed our student council members reading to them during the afternoon too.
The library was the place to be at both breaks with many activities on offer. The student council along with supporting staff enjoyed the stream of students immersed in making and creating all things ‘blue!’ from pasta necklaces, bowerbird nests and bookmarks. Our Preps didn’t miss out either because they went on a scavenger hunt just like the ‘satin bowerbird’ does, for blue gems and treasure in their sandpit! Do check out some snaps from the day.
Just keep reading everyone…
P-2 Science and Technology with Mrs Crowe
‘Hands On and Minds On’ investigations are vitally important for young children from Prep to Year Two. Using every sense throughout learning investigations provides very powerful stimulation for the brain. Strong connections are built in the brain which enables children to retain more of all their learning. The P-2 Science Lab is a weekly investigative “minds and hands on” interactive time that builds your child’s brain connections which supports their learning in home class.
Year Two chemists mixed household liquids to create emulsions. All scientists were totally engaged in investigating, predicting and observing Density Experiments. Much ‘Questioning and Problem Solving’ occurred as substances were mixed. Students ‘Strived for Accuracy’ in their recordings of each experiment and displayed excellent bookwork.Did you realise that washing the dishes is a density experiment happening in your sink?
Preps investigated “waterproof or absorbent” as they observed a variety of materials being exposed to water. Our little scientists eagerly made predictions about which material would be ‘absorbent’ or ‘waterproof’.
Happy sounds of Wonderment and Awe were bouncing off the walls of the Science Lab as blue water was sprayed over their chosen items! Materials were matched to word cards ‘absorbent’ and ‘waterproof’ when tested in two ways. Extremely important for young scientists to use and see actual scientific words in print.
World Bee Day was held on Monday this week.It was a BUZZ for all!Preps looked great in their bee hats! Make sure you read the week eight newsletter for more details, and plenty of BEEautiful photos, of students from all year levels!
Sports Report with Mr. Blair - PE Teacher
Congratulations to Elissa C and Isabella P who were recently selected into the girls' district soccer team. It was a slippery afternoon after a rainy morning but they both kept a steady head and feet, and impressed the convenor to make the district team containing potential future Matildas.
Also congratulations to Lorenzo M and Braxton C for making the U11 Rugby Districts team. This is a highly skilled and competitive team to be selected for and they should both be very proud of their efforts in the sport to achieve this opportunity.
Following the successes from district cross country, the 1500m trial notification happening on the 24/07/24 has been released for Physical Education Teachers to continue training their school’s long distance runners, or develop some students who didn’t make the cross country team- but are speedy over a 1500m distance around a flat course. If you would like your child to do some training over the coming weeks during the morning before school with me, to see if they could qualify, please be in contact via email for further information and I will arrange some training sessions on the school oval- which has been freshly painted by Mr. Eric in preparation for the running races for our sports carnivals happening later this term. My email is hdbla0@eq.edu.au
Update from our School Captains - Wynnum Whereabouts
As School Captains of Wynnum State School, we are here to provide you with an update on some of the things we’ve been involved in the past couple of weeks and how much we’ve gained from these experiences.
First of all, is the ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony in the city. So many schools gathered at the ANZAC Square to commemorate the Australian and New Zealander soldiers who have fallen in the war. Each school that was in attendance laid a wreath to represent their school community. On that same day, we had the privilege to meet the Governor General which was another exciting part of our day.
Next in line, were the review interviews for our school’s Annual Implementation Plan. We were asked a variety of questions as student leaders regarding our learning in Maths, English, the feedback we receive from our teachers and what makes Wynnum State School a unique place to be. It was all a really cool experience to be a part of such a significant process within our school.
To conclude, on the 8th of May, all the Wynnum State School Captains were invited to help guide the future preps and their families on a tour around our school. Each Captain was assigned a partner and a specific location around the school where we were able to share some information about that location and what happens there during school hours, for example: the K1 area. The little kids were bursting with excitement the moment they saw K1.

Inclusion Matters
State wide times tables competition
Great News! Last week, we invited students to nominate themselves for a statewide times table competition. After three days of intense calculations, involving our Year 4 and Year 5 students, I am thrilled to announce that our school team has achieved an impressive second place! This is a remarkable accomplishment. Congratulations to everyone involved—you’ve made us very proud.
Coming up: The Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee for students in Years 3-6 this July—stay tuned for more details!

A Day on the Bay
Last week, Mr Ionn and Mrs Collingwood joined some local Principals and Inclusion Leaders for a morning sail with the crew from MAKING WAVES. This foundation provides sailing opportunities for people of different abilities to experience the exhilaration of sailing. Through carefully selected volunteers Making Waves offers free, short-term programs targeting teamwork, personal and social skills. The outcomes of these programs also see a positive impact on behaviour, school attendance and engagement. Wynnum State School is excited to connect with Making Waves and are looking to tailor a program that can support our students and families.

Mother’s Day Library Activities
The activities in the library were a blast! The student council members welcomed the younger children and helped and supported students to make the special person in their lives a special handmade card.
Year 6 students enjoyed engaging with the younger children and helping them make crafts, watching them turn some paper and templates into amazing work.
We’d like thank the library team for supporting our ideas and library craft activities. Thank you Mrs Sutton, Ms Sellars and Mrs Lakeman for letting us use the library resources and working space for our first student council event.
Mother’s Day Stall
Students had the opportunity to purchase items for their loved ones during the Mother’s Day stall that was held on Thursday, 9 May.
There were so many amazing options to choose from, we were all spoilt for choice. We hope all the Mums, Carers, Grandmas, Nannas, Aunties and awesome role models loved their gifts. The stall was a huge success and raised $2500 dollars.
We would like to thank our P&C organisers for bringing the Mother’s Day stall back to Wynnum State School.

Year 3 Excursion to Fort Lytton
In week 5, year 3 students became junior historians, as they explored Fort Lytton. The excursion linked to our History unit where we learnt about the past and what significance it has in the present. Students joined ‘Bombadier’ to learn about Fort Lytton’s defence history and its significance locally and globally. They also investigated and evaluated sources of information and artefacts within the museum. Everyone had an amazing day and we all learnt many things about the past that is within our community.
P&C News
The team were excited to bring back the Mother's day stall in partnership with the Student Council. Thank you to all who supported the stall which raised approximately $2,500.
The Tropical Disco tickets are now available for purchase on munch monitors. There are various options to volunteer so please have a look at our FB page facebook.com/WSSPandC for more information.
We love our Volunteers! It is only because of our amazing volunteers that the P&C community are able to support the school in the way we do.
We have an exciting opportunity for those who would like to help in the tuckshop or with our events, but do not yet have the skills.
Ross Vasta has granted the P&C team funding to pay for two food safety certificates and a barista certificate for our volunteers. If you would like to take part in this unique opportunity, please send us an email at wynnumss.pandc@gmail.com and we can provide more information. This opportunity is only available until the end of June, so please get in quick.
