Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
Review
In week 3, we welcomed the Department's School Review Team, to undertake our whole school review. As mentioned, this review takes place every four years, and is an important component of building our next strategic plan – a plan that outlines our 'big work' for the next four years.
You may have been one of the parents /carers asked questions at the gate by the team. Over 139 people were involved in conversations about our school improvement journey.
The review report will be made available to school and community in three to four weeks.
However, for school staff, the review team presented four major affirmations and five improvement strategies at the end of the three days. The affirmations centred on our learning culture, our work in culture and community and explicit understanding of our improvement agenda. The affirmations validated our recent work as the right work, and assists to make the next strategic plan a defined next step for the school. Our improvement strategies did not come with any surprises, complementing what we believed to be our next steps. PBL features heavily, but so to our work to establish an evidenced based approach to capturing our signature practices, supporting our professional learning teams and embedding whole school practices.
The improvement strategies will take four years, and builds a roadmap in that time frame, to ensure we are in a state of never-ending improvement.
Student Leaders Badge Ceremony
It was an honour to present our school leaders with their badges and hear their collective pledge at our recent student leaders' badge ceremony.
May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
This May, we join with all Queenslanders in saying ‘No’ to domestic and family violence. Not all domestic and family violence involves physical abuse. Coercive control is a pattern of abusive behaviour and can include financial, social and emotional abuse. For help and resources visit the Domestic and family violence website: https://www.qld.gov.au/community/getting-support-health-social-issue/support-victims-abuse/domestic-family-violence/my-situation-is/how-do-i-help-my-community-understand-domestic-violence/domestic-and-family-violence-resources
Permission forms/consent
Your child’s educational journey is enhanced through excursions and incursions, essential components of the state school curriculum. However, participation depends on parent/caregiver consent. Completing permission forms promptly via Qparents or requesting a hard copy from the office ensures they don’t miss out on valuable learning experiences.
Remember: No consent = No participation.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our school processes.
Sickness at school
If your child is feeling unwell or is beginning to develop symptoms, we kindly request that you keep them at home from school until they have been symptom-free for a period of 24 hours.
For further guidance on school exclusion periods and related matters, please refer to the attached chart below.
Thank you for your cooperation in safeguarding the well-being of our school community.

Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Just under four weeks to go until our WSS Year 6 Readers’ Cup team compete in the regional Bayside competition. Run by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, the competition is open to state and private schools and will be held on Monday 10 June at Victoria Point State School. Our team of five passionate Wynnum Warrior readers are, Emily C, Evie J, Clara S, Charlie O and Mila G. These students are currently reading through the five selected books that will be the focus of questioning on the night. The competition challenges students to read widely, strive for accuracy, work interdependently while continuing to develop their love of reading. Thank you, Mrs Lakeman, for coordinating this school event.
“Unbeelievable! Has it been one year since our last World Bee Day on the 20 May?” Can’t wait for Mrs Crowe’s all-day event in the Science Lab. You might like to check out this digital reading of, Please Please the Bees by Gerald Kelley and bee ready the buzz!

P-2 Science and Technology with Mrs Crowe
Chemical Science challenge for Year One this week was to work interdependently, in groups of three, to build ‘Spaghetti and Marshmallow Towers’ (not as easy as it sounds!).
Questioning, problem solving, creating, imagining and innovating together was very evident as each group manipulated the tricky materials to produce their tower. Even if the tower did not eventually stand up, each group learned that persistence is so important for success. Expressions of ‘Wonderment and Awe’ echoed from the Science Lab when the towers were successful!
World Bee Day is coming! This coming Monday 20th May, Junior Science Lab and Library will BEE alive with amazing interactive learning about bees and their significance for our future survival.
Go to the website for more information https://www.worldbeeday.org.au/
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday May 22 our school will be participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime. To promote the event and create a fun atmosphere across our school, our Student Council will be holding a ‘Bowerbird Blues’ free dress day where students can come to school wearing blue, bringing a gold coin donation to raise money for our Student Council and resources for our amazing library!
In line with National Simultaneous Storytime, students are invited to the library during break times to participate in some fun activities with our Student Council.

I’d like to thank Rebecca McKeown for being out school’s official on the day as well as Shannon and Kristopher for helping with transportation. It was great to have all the families cheering and supporting our team. All of our competing students ran their 3km and 2km races with tenacity and finished strong- as can be seen in the photos taken at the last corner before the finish. It was a great day out and I was thankful to be part of it.
