Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
ANZACs Remembered
ANZAC Day plays an integral role in our school, both as a cultural and as a curriculum focus.
Our school captains attended the Brisbane City Council ANZAC Ceremony. Here they were able to lay a wreath to represent the school and happened to get to shake hands with the Governor General at the same time. Our captains represented our Wynnum Warriors superbly at such a significant ceremony.
School based ANZAC Day
Wynnum State School remembered the fallen in a moving ANZAC service on Wednesday.
Congratulations to our student leaders for their capable and confident hosting of the ANZAC Day commemoration. The occasion was sombre, respectful and a credit to all involved. A shout out to our school band (led by Mr John Cosic) and vocal ensemble, (led by Ms Jasmine Barnes), and conducted by Year 6 student Amity C. Their respective performances were a pleasure to hear and witness.
All Wynnum Warriors showed great respect during the service. We were joined by special guests, including representatives from the Wynnum R.S.L.
Wynnum Community ANZAC Day
A contingent of students, staff and parents joined with the school team on ANAZAC Day to represent Wynnum State School during the march through Wynnum, culminating in the participation of the Wynnum R.S.L ANZAC Day ceremony. Our two student leaders did a great job in laying a wreath on behalf of the Wynnum State School community. I would like thank the many school staff members for their support, including the cafeteria for the great afternoon tea for special guests.
Please find in the gallery below some photos taken at all three events.
Lest we forget.

- Qparents (attendance tab)
- Text our absentee line - 0429 467 361

If your child is going to be absent for more than 10 consecutive days please ensure to make contact with the office staff to complete an exemption form.
Thank you for your co-operation on our student absence processes.
School Hats
Please ensure your child has a named Wynnum SS hat. Hats are an important part of the school uniform and our Sun Safe policy. School hats can be purchased from the Munch Monitor website or directly from our uniform shop.
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Visual displays encourage remembrance and reflection. Below are some thoughtful and inspired school displays created for ANZAC day. Thank you to Prep/1BC for allowing us to display your beautiful ‘poppy’ artwork in the Auditiorum during our school service. Thank you also to 2HA and PCYC for your colourful poppies that lined our school surrounds.
We can't wait for NSS 2024!
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 24th successful year, we will be celebrating NSS on Wednesday 22 May along with the rest of Australia. Our student council will be hosting fun activities in the library so stayed tuned.
And finally Scholastic orders are due on Thursday and don’t forget your $5 credit, if you make any order in Issue 3.
Keep reading everyone!
P-2 Science and Technology with Mrs Crowe
Year One Palaeontology teams 1BC,1CL,1LH and 1PC engaged in significant research and exploration for dinosaur fossils in the final week of Term One.
An official dig site was previously identified within our school grounds from a ‘drone survey’ conducted by the ‘Science and Palaeontology Departments of Universities across Australia’. University professors then invited our WSS Year One scientists to conduct the exploratory dig (Role play 😊)!
The Chief Palaeontology dig Supervisor (aka Mrs Crowe) visited the site as our teams were in action. She was very impressed with each team’s use of their specialised tools to carefully search for the fossilised eggs. Our young Wynnum Warrior palaeontologists displayed their ability to Persist and Strive for Accuracy. Each team member focused very precisely on searching for their fossil, delicately removing it from the dig site and brushing it carefully, for photographic recording.
Each scientist was permitted to keep their fossilised dinosaur found inside the egg. All data from each team’s dig was recorded and sent back to the universities. Exciting and ground-breaking research for the teams of young scientists as you will see in the photos below!
Term Two will be a hands-on scientific study of Chemical Sciences in the Prep to Year Two Science Lab:
Prep: What’s it Made of? Observable properties of materials
Year One: Spot the Difference Investigating change in everyday materials
Year Two: All Mixed Up Combining substances and materials
World Bee Day will be an exciting scientific event this term. BEE investigations will be buzzing at school in week six on Monday 20th May!
Term Two Digital Technology learning will focus on the correct use of laptops. Year One students will practice login, sign out and learn how to produce a Word document including an inserted picture. Other digital tools such as digital cameras, iPads and printers will also be explored.
Welcome back everyone!
Sports Report with Mr. Blair - PE Teacher
Interschool sport is well underway with students now into their 3rd week of training and participating in a variety of sports. Thanks to all the teachers who make this opportunity possible for our Wynnum Warriors in years 4, 5 and 6. It has been great seeing some supportive families at touch football and from reports, our students have been trying their best and showing great sportsmanship at our various locations.
Harrison K participated in some soccer competitions during the holidays where he had the tricky task of being the goal keeper during a deciding penalty shootout. He along with James R and Leighton F will be trialling for the district soccer team. Wishing them all the best.
Congratulations to the girls who particpated in the district AFL trials (Millie, Evie, Frankie & Sienna). Well done and goodluck to Evie & Millie for making the MET east team.
Our budding Matildas of Isabella P, Elissa C, and Emily C are also trialling for the girls district soccer team and we wish them all the best.
On Wednesday the 1st of May the following students are representing the school at our district cross country carnival. These students have been training hard and will be displaying our new Cross Country singlets as they race through Capalaba Regional Park. We wish them all the best.

Guidance Officer update with Mrs Manning
Dear Parents,
In light of Guidance Week (Monday 22 April – Friday 3 May), I would like to highlight the support that Guidance Officers offer at school.
Guidance Officers serve as trusted allies for both students, parents and staff alike. We offer a listening ear, providing a safe space for students to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Whether it's academic struggles, social challenges, or personal issues, Guidance Officers are there to offer guidance, empathy, and practical solutions, helping students to navigate their academic and social-emotional journey at school.
As parents, I encourage you to work hand in hand with the school team to nurture the holistic development of our children and empower them to reach their full potential. Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher to start a discussion should you feel they need additional support.
I am available to meet to discuss academic goals and concerns and to offer support with personal or social-emotional concerns. I work closely with staff and families to ensure that each student receives personalized support tailored to their unique needs.

What's happening in Year 5?
What's been happening in Year 2?
Heather Richards, our local history librarian came to speak to the Year 2 students about a local site of significance, the Wynnum Wading Pool and Jetty. Heather also brought historical artefacts for the students to see, hold and feel to investigate what they might have been used for in the past.
Wellbeing Wonderings
This year, the Inclusion Team has launched an exciting trial of a new Acceleration Program! Designed to build on the success of Year 5 Passion Projects, this initiative begins by supporting our year 4 cohort. It aims to evaluate engagement and feasibility, sparking curiosity and providing extra challenges for students. The program offers a tailored curriculum and specialised resources. Additionally, students will have opportunities to participate in state-wide literacy and numeracy competitions alongside same aged peers, unlocking their full potential. This initiative embodies Wynnum’s dedication to equity and excellence, showcasing the limitless possibilities of our students. Get ready to join us on this exciting new educational journey—stay tuned for updates!
