Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
With only one day of this term remaining, I want to praise our Wynnum Warriors for their collective learning engagement, academic performance and for following our school expectations in Term 1. I am always excited for our Year 6 students attending camp in the last week , and I always enjoy my visit to camp.
As I visit our classrooms, I see and hear confident, connected and curious learners who are taking charge of their own learning. I heard many positive phrases being shared at the recent Term 1 Parent Teacher Interviews.
P&C 2024
The Annual General Meeting of the school’s P&C always gives me pause for thought as to how important the P&C is to the programs, events and opportunities that make our community unique. The generous contributions made by the P&C add to the vitality and enrichment experiences for our Wynnum Warriors.
Our P&C is run by a committed team of volunteers who are driven, not just by what they want for their own children but for the children of the wider community, both for today and also to ensure the positive experiences of Wynnum Warriors long into the future. From our Wynnum Wahoos Swim Club, the Tuckshop, Uniform Shop and all the events in between, our P&C is integral to the school’s strategic outlook.
The AGM provided an opportunity for the school leaders to express our sincere thanks to all members of our School’s P&C for their generosity of time, commitment to and investment in our school for the continued benefit of our the most important people in our community… our students.
I would like to sincerely thank our 2023 Executive Team – for the countless hours you have contributed both in recognised capacities and the many hours and conversations that have occurred behind the scenes. I am thrilled to welcome the Executive Team for 2024 and I am very much looking forward to the work we will do collectively to enhance our school. Please see the P&C news section to get to know our new team.
2024 NAPLAN – National Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy
This week marks the completion of NAPLAN 2024 for our Year 3 and 5 students. NAPLAN testing is often a contentious issue for school communities. It often involves negative media attention, and this invites narratives that potentially raise student anxiety. Our school focus has been based on our Warriors to do their individual best. No test can measure a child’s worth and I believe the balance was once again set just right for our learners to show us what they know and can do, and NAPLAN provides us with another piece of data, inclusive of an existing rigorous process of assessment against the Australian Curriculum. The power of the relationship between our staff and students is testimony to the way students participated this year. As seen in the photo gallery Darcy, one of beloved therapy dogs considered the NAPLAN window as just another couple of weeks on the job at school!
Harmony Week
Australia celebrates Harmony between Monday 18th to the 24th of March. Everyone belongs. Harmony Week celebrates cultural diversity, inclusivity, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Wynnum State School embraces our cultural diversity and is proud to embed this belief into the heart of who we are and how we deliver relevant, representative and responsive services to our students and community.
Harmony Week celebrates the fact that Australians come from all over the world. In fact, over half of Australians were born overseas, or have at least one parent who was born overseas. Australia is made up of people who all contribute different ideas, religions, languages and customs to our country. The diversity of people who live in Australia make it such an interesting and special place to live. It is celebrated around Australia each year to celebrate our multicultural society.

School Holidays
We wish you all a safe a happy holiday. See you all for the first day of Term 2! (Monday 15 April).
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Anzac Day is fast approaching and it marks an important time to remember and respect one of the most important historical dates in our country’s calendar.
Our library has a number of ANZAC Day books written specifically with our young people in mind. Here are some of the ones that you may want to explore with your children.
Easter holiday reading sorted? Holidays are an ideal time for our students to catch up on reading. We encourage all students to hop in and borrow books from the library for this Easter break!
…to our Playpals – young citizens dedicating time, energy, kind and mindful actions and words to our very young citizens.
Just keep reading…

Wynnum Warriors ‘Step Up to Clean Up’ Day
Our Wynnum Warriors eagerly stepped up to clean up our school environment on Wednesday 6th March. Participating classes were all very determined to pick up every single piece of rubbish from all nooks and crannies in our gardens and pathways. Just under 14kgs of rubbish was collected over the day!
Remember to send lunches with minimal plastic and packaging. Please remind your children to bring their packaging back home or to put it into the waste bins at school carefully so it doesn’t blow down to the bay or into the school gardens. Look at these great photos of our warriors hard at work, and feeling proud, to clean up our school environment!
World Frog Day
The Junior Science lab was HOPPING with wonderment and awe as students from Prep to Year Six were invited to celebrate WORLD FROG DAY last week!
Investigations of frog life cycle stages, habitats, food and listening to frog calls made everyone HOPPY! Living creatures such as crickets, specimens and models of moths and frogs, books ,posters and games promoted many questions and discussion of how frogs live and the importance of caring for their environment. HOPPY HOLIDAYS everyone!
Sports Report with Mr. Blair
As Term 1 comes to a close, I would like to acknowledge some of the Wynnum Warriors who achieved sporting success in Term 1.
Azalea T competed at the NORDIC Regional championships at QSAC in Athletics. She placed 10th in the championships amongst the region and came out with a new PB time. Congratulations to Azalea.
Tomasi W and Quinton T both made the Touch football and rugby district teams. Tomasi also made the Met- East team for touch football. Congratulations to Tomasi and Quinton, double threats!
Frankie B, Millie G, Evie D and Sienna F all made the District team for girls AFL. Amazing efforts girls!
Memphis W made the district team for the 10-12 years age group. She then went on to make the Met- East team also. Incredible stuff Memphis!
In District Swimming, the following students represented our school at Chandler earlier this term. Mei A, Lola B, Elissa C, Jack H, Oliver P and Lars T all competed and did the school proud. Lola and Lars then went on to the Met-East carnival because of their super-fast times. Naomi B also needs a shout out. Naomi also qualified with her times for the district carnival but had an injury and did not attend this year.
On the 8th of March, students swam at the Wondall Road Challenge hosted by Moreton Bay College. Students made us so proud with their efforts, filling every race with their teal swimming caps and it was great to fill all 40 positions this year. Thanks to the students who swam up age groups to fill the spare slots and make all the relay teams at the end possible. We didn’t come away with the win but had some fantastic individual achievements and lots of fun while trying! I may be biased, but I think we had the best War Cry out of all of the schools!!
Cross Country Day with Mr. Blair
On Friday the 22nd of March, students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 all competed in the cross country carnival. All students tried their best and some speedy students were able to run through the entire 1.2km course, up the grass hill and through the playground- being cheered on the entire way. After I had made some calls to Mother Nature, she held off the rain until the afternoon and we enjoyed a cooler temperature than previous years- perfect for running. Students who were the fastest three boys and girls were selected into the district team for 10, 11 and 12 year old’s- if their time was fast enough. Training will resume for those selected students early next term in preparation for the district carnival. The winning house will be announced in the first assembly next term. I would like to thank the teachers and paraprofessionals who helped on the day to allow for a smooth running of the carnival. It was great to see so many family members there supporting our Wynnum Warriors. The next big carnival will be the Sports Carnival (previously Smart Moves Carnival) next term. Details to come early next term.
Wellbeing Wonderings
The wellbeing team would like to acknowledge the amazing parents and carers in our school community. We see how you show up to support your children when there are moments of celebration and when there are difficult conversations to be had.
Sometimes we all need a listening ear at times of the day when schools and other services are shut. If you find yourself in this situation; there is a free service available with Parentline: https://parentline.com.au/
Parentline is a confidential telephone service providing professional counselling and support in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Access is available 7 days a week at the following times: phones are open every day from 8am – 10pm, while WebChat is available every day from 8am – 9pm.
