Principal's Message with Acting Principal Mrs Collingwood
Welcome to Term 4! We are eagerly anticipating a vibrant and eventful term ahead, packed with celebrations, incursions, excursions, engaging activities, and valuable learning experiences. Unfortunately, Mr. Ionn has had an injurious end to his holiday break and will be taking some time to recover. Nevertheless, the Executive Team are committed to guiding the school through this exciting period. From next week, Ms Megan Connell will take the reins as Acting Principal until Mr Ionn returns later in the term.
Term 4 is also a time for transitions. This term, we will welcome our 2024 Prep students and families into their formal schooling journey. We will also say farewell to our Year 6 cohort, supporting connection with their future high school. Careful consideration is also given for other year level transitions, particularly the planning of 2024 classes.
Later this term we will begin the process of developing classes for 2024. Teachers and Administration are collaboratively involved in this process and thoughtfully analyse each child’s academic, social and emotional needs when making a class placement. This process is extensive and a lot of time, thought and care is taken to ensure that children are placed in the most appropriate class, that best suits their needs.
From time-to-time, parents contact their child’s current teacher to request a particular teacher or friends for their child to be placed with in their future class. At Wynnum State School we believe that the information teachers collaboratively consider within the school context ensures the most appropriate class placements. However, if you believe there is information regarding your child’s learning, social or emotional needs that your child’s teacher or Administration have not already been made aware of during this year, and this information may impact on their class placement for 2024, please contact the school office via email the.principal@wynnumss.eq.edu.au by the end of week 4 (27 October).
During weeks 8 and 9, Prep to Year 5 students will take part in ‘Step-Up’ day. This is when students have the opportunity to spend some time with their 2024 teacher in their 2024 classroom. Once classes have been confirmed for ‘Step-Up Day’, changes to move children to different classes cannot occur (unless there is a decrease or increase in teacher numbers at the start of 2024 and a reallocation of classes is required). We will advertise the exact ‘Step-Up’ dates as soon as they are finalised, so you can check and advise if your child/ren will not be able to attend. This enables us to share the 2024 information with them in another format.
Also, if you have children in Prep to Year 5 who will not be returning to WSS in 2024, thank you for advising us asap to assist with class organisation.
Term Date Claimers
With so many events happening, please check our date claimers below. These can also be found on our website with reminders on the Wynnum State School Facebook page. Class teachers will also inform parents of any additional class details.
Warm regards
Lara Collingwood
Acting Principal

Please make contact with the office if you know your child will not be returning in 2024 (excluding year 6 students).
2023 Celebration Ceremony
Teaching and Learning with Ms O'Donoghue (Head of Curriculum)
Over the last two terms, our teachers have been meeting with colleagues from Manly SS and Gumdale SS. This process involves sharing of units of work and assessments to ensure we are creating equal opportunity for all students to access the Australian Curriculum. It involves some comprehensive discussion about how the unit of work meets the criteria outlined by the Achievement Standard. The purpose of moderation is to reflect on the how and what we provide feedback on to improve student results. It has been an opportunity to share practice across the three schools and engage in some rigorous discussions about the content we teach for each year level.
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Scholastic Book Club Issue 7 is out now…
I hope you have a copy of Issue 7 to peruse with the family. Remember you can download the issue too. There are pages of quality value books on offer. Orders due back to the library or ordered online by Thursday 19th October.
Remember students, you are responsible for all the books you borrow from our library. Parents, please encourage your child to put their books in their school bags on their library days so they don’t miss out on borrowing more fabulous books. Ms Sellars is preparing emails home to a number of families who are still holding on to books from term 3!

P-2 Science and Technology with Mrs Crowe
Design Technology will be BIG during Term Four. Prep to Year Two classes enter into step four of the design process: Plan and Create Product.
Prep: Draw their own design plan for a Chicken Coop
Year One: Final ‘Playground’ design diagram in Bird’s Eye View format then create a small model using plasticine, Lego or Stem Kits.
Year Two: Final design drawing of Raft in side view and top view. Construct using sustainable and recyclable materials. Float test in water and evaluate for improvements.
The study of Physical Sciences will fill up the Science Lab with scientific questioning, problem solving, thinking flexibly and persisting as each class investigates the concepts of matter in motion, energy and forces!
The children will surely pose the most amazing questions to take their own learning to higher levels every time they investigate all the wonders of our physical world!
Prep: ‘On the Move’ (Physical movement of objects and body)
Year One: ‘Look, Listen’ (Sensing Light and Sound)
Year Two: ‘Push and Pull’ (Force and Gravity)
Year 5 Leadership Forum
The process for selecting the 2024 School Leaders commenced this week, beginning with the Year 5 Leadership Forum. The Year 5 students were visited by invited guests, School Captains, Junior Captains and Indigenous Captains, from Wynnum State High School and Brisbane Bayside State College. Students were provided with an opportunity to ask burning questions and advice as they begin the first step in their leadership journey. Our guests shared their experiences in leadership providing our Year 5s with an insight into the skills required to be a leader, challenges that could be faced and opportunities that can arise from being in a leadership role.
Following the leadership forum, students who are interested in a leadership position were provided with an ‘Expression of Interest’ application to submit. We look forward to guiding the students through this process.
