Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
School Opinion Survey
The School Opinion Survey gives you the opportunity to have your say about how the school is performing. The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 18 August 2023. All families, school staff and senior students will be invited to participate. I encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 17 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Find out more about the School Opinion Survey.
NAPLAN Reports
The reporting of NAPLAN results to parents and carers is changing. If your child is in Year 3 or Year 5 this year, and they participated in NAPLAN, you will shortly receive individual student reports, showing your child’s achievement in each test domain, according to four levels of NAPLAN proficiency: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. The report will also provide information about student knowledge and skills within each proficiency. A factsheet included with your child’s report will detail the new changes. Find out more at Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

Road Safety Messsage
We have had reports from concerned members of the public about WSS students using scooters in unsafe ways travelling to and from school. If your child or children use scooters, we encourage you to have another conversation/reminder about the importance of wearing helmets and being safe on roads, footpaths and carparks. If you receive a message from school about your child specifically, please take it as it is intended, the Village working together to keep our children safe.
Teaching and Learning with Ms O'Donoghue (Head of Curriculum)
Think Boards in Maths
A 'think board' is a teaching tool that reinforces understanding of topics our students have been learning. We can see how our students make connections between different mathematical concepts as they visually represent their thinking.
Each year level has a number think board that aligns with the Australian Curriculum. Teachers consolidate concepts and monitor student progress using this tool.
Here are a couple of examples of our think boards.
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
P-2 Science and Technology with Mrs Crowe
Our Earth is an amazing place, full of natural changes happening around us every second of the day and night. Year One worked interdependently in small groups to investigate “natural changes” in their world by comparing ‘before’ and ‘after’ change cards together. The young scientists then selected three natural features to record in their Science Journal. Their diagrams showed how the features change over time. Look at the happy and proud faces in these photos!
Year Two continued their study of water to find out how water is used and where water equipment is located in our school. Who would have thought that the water points in our school would be so exciting! Expressions of wonderment and awe happened every time someone discovered yet another place where water was collected, stored, used or wasted. Look at how many different ways water works in our school.
National Science Week is coming in Week Six (12th August – 19th August). The theme for 2023 is ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries’. This fits perfectly with our Design Technology learning. The Science Lab will have interactive displays and information for students to engage in and explore throughout Science Week. Check the website for online events and experiences.

National Tree Day 2023 is coming up this Sunday 30th July. Schools will be involved in tree planting and learning experiences on Friday 28th July. Our student council ran a competition this week. Winners from each class planted a tree with the student council members today. Check out the ‘National Tree Day’ website link below for activities to do at home and other great ideas for your family to become involved this Sunday for a better future for us all.
Senior Science with Mrs Brooks
This term students from Year 3 – 6 are exploring the Earth and Space Sciences. The Year 3 unit is ‘Day and Night’, where they will be exploring how the Sun, Earth and Moon create day and night. The Year 4 unit is ‘Beneath our Feet’ where students will explore soils, rocks and erosion. The Year 5 unit is ‘Earth’s Place in Space’ where students will explore the key features of our solar system and the inventions that may now be a part of our everyday lives due to space exploration. The Year 6 unit is ‘Creators and Destroyers’ where students will be exploring geological natural events, particularly volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes.
Over the past two weeks, the Year 4 students have looked closely at three soil samples and taking note of how they feel, what they notice under a magnifying glass and how they sound when rubbed against paper. They then made comparisons, discussing how they are similar and different.
Musical Notes with Mrs Barnes (Performing Arts Specialist teacher)
Welcome all,
Last weekend was the St Peter’s Church Fete where our Junior and Senior Bands delighted the crowds with a collection of songs. This was a great chance for our bands to show how much they’ve learned this year, especially for the Junior Band as this was their first public performance. Both bands performed exceptionally well, and we expect their performances at Music by the Bay will be even better. Please come and support our talented students at Manly Foreshore on Sunday the 20th of August.
Yours in music!
Sports Report with Mr. Blair (P.E. teacher)
Students during Physical Education began the term learning some Yulunga Traditional Indigenous games during NAIDOC week, learning about the culture and fun games that have been played for thousands of years in Australia. Students have also begun practicing for the sports carnival happening later in the term (Thursday of week 8). For the seniors, they will be showcasing different running races, high jump, throwing activities and tug of war. The juniors will compete in egg and spoon races, jumping sack races, tug of war and running races. The juniors in prep to grade 3 will be in the morning session (9am until 10:30) and seniors, grade 4 to 6 the middle and final sessions of the day (11:15- 12:45pm and then 1:15-2:45pm).
It has been great hearing the students' excitement towards the women’s football (soccer) world cup happening at the moment. To join in with the excitement, Wynnum State School is hosting a Wynnum Soccer World Cup. Students have already been placed into teams, representing different nations and have competed today at both lunchtimes against other mixed teams. I will enjoy watching the games over the next several weeks and I am starting to limber up for the staff vs student soccer match.
Could I please remind parents and carers to ensure their child is bringing a hat to school each day. Most Physical Education lessons are out on the sunny oval this term and sun safety is important, especially in the sunshine state. Students are also required to wear a hat at lunchtimes when they are out on the oval.
In the attached picture, Keidean Coleman, a past student of Wynnum State School, is inspiring the next generation of Wynnum warriors. Keidean is a current AFL player for the Brisbane lions and has just celebrated his 50th game for the team. A very inspiring alumni. Thanks to Nikki McCullough for passing along the photo.
Story Dogs
The Story Dogs team will once again be visiting the Year 5 cohort each Friday morning as the Story Dogs Reading Program is launched in Term 3. This program is a fun and unique way to support reading. Students are provided with an opportunity each week to improve their skills and gain confidence as they read aloud to Boss, a trained companion dog, and Kerrie his handler.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
In August every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. This data will inform the resourcing provided to schools to support children with disabilities.
The data collection process will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured.
Further information about the NCCD can be found at https://www.nccd.edu.au/wider-support-materials/what-nccd?parent=/understanding-nccd&activity=/wider-support-materials/what-nccd&step=-1
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
Pyjama Day Fundraiser
On the last day of Term 2 we had our pyjama day fundraiser to raise funds for children in foster care. The day was a huge success and saw everyone come to school comfy and cosy. In total we raised $586.70. Thank you for all your donations, it means a lot.
A special mention to the following families who donated via the pyjama foundation website, Penny Martin, the Price family and an anonymous member of our school community.
Student Council also lead a design competition where students designed Wynnum State School pyjamas. Lucky winners got to pick a friend to sit with them in the VIP section to watch Wynnum Idol. Our lucky winners were Ruby G in 1LB, Lily N in 2CG and Emily C in 5HC. Based on the smiles on their faces, they had a great time.
