Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
Semester 1 has been a busy and productive one for the school, maintaining high expectations and providing excellence in teaching, as well as a safe and supportive learning environment.
P&C News
The Wynnum P&C recently conducted their Annual General Meeting. I would like to acknowledge the significant work of outgoing president Sophia Holt. As an outstanding President, the P&C and school proudly nominated Sophia for an Honorary Life Membership of the P&C.
A big congratulations and welcome to the newly elected P&C Executives for 2023:
President: Ruth Parker
Vice Presidents: Angus Gorrie & Ashley Woodbury
Secretary: Davisha Hurkoo
Treasurer: Sophia Holt & Kasey Fox
A further congratulations to our P&C for the great Trivia Night. A wonderfully organised event that was well attended with proceeds supporting the essential resources for our school. As part of the teaching team on the night, and as a deeply competitive driven people, we aim to improve our placings for next year – but we had a blast! Thank you.
Report Cards
Semester 1 Report Cards will be emailed home on Wednesday, the 21st of June. We ask all families to contact our administration if you need to update your email details.
Written report cards are provided to parents and caregivers twice a year. Staff engage in rigorous professional collaboration sessions planning, assessing and moderating student’s work. This process occurs throughout the term, quality assuring the grades awarded to all students.
Reporting is part of communicating with parents and building the school-parent partnership to improve student learning. Our reports outline:
- the student’s achievement against expected standards
- how well the student is engaging with the expected learning
- focus on the next steps
Having a discussion with your child about their report is a powerful way to celebrate success, identify challenge and have a conversation in relation to setting goals for next semester. I also encourage parents and caregivers to discuss the report with a view to bringing this feedback as the basis of ongoing communications with your child’s homeroom teacher to have a shared focus on the next steps.
2024 Prep Enrolments
Parents are encouraged to register student enrolment for the 2024 Prep Year. This includes the younger siblings of families already enrolled with us. Age and residence (home address) criteria apply. Places for ‘in-catchment’ students have historically been very popular and usually fill quickly. If you are aware of family members or friends who live within our catchment area and are looking for a quality early years program and a terrific start to their child’s entry into school, please encourage them to make contact with our school office ASAP - all enquiries welcome.
Family and Child Connect
Family and Child Connect provides families free, unlimited and confidential advice. They can connect you to local services that help with:

Student Council Pyjama Day (23/06)
On Friday the 23rd of June (the last day of Term), all students and teachers are invited to come to school in their most comfortable and cosiest pyjamas! Yes that’s right, not only do we get to watch Wynnum Idol, we get to watch it in our Pyjamas!
For all this fun, it just costs a gold coin donation! All money raised will be donated to the Pyjama Foundation. The Pyjama Foundation was founded in 2004 to give children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with learning, life skills, and confidence.
To make the day even better, the tuckshop will have special meal deals. Check out the flyers to see which one you want!
The Student Council will also be running a pyjama design competition. Come to the library to get your template then design your own Wynnum State School Pyjamas. Every entry costs 50c which will go towards the student council fund to make many more fun events for you to partake in. There will be one winner from P -1, 2-3 & 4-6. The lucky winners will win the amazing prize of having their very own VIP area to watch Wynnum Idol in, with bean bags, pillows, complementary food and drink, and to top it off, you have the choice to bring a friend along. You can enter as many times as you like, so get creative today!!
Teaching and Learning with Ms O'Donoghue (Head of Curriculum)
Do you know what NAIDOC stands for?
On 26 January 1938, while many Australians celebrated the 150th anniversary of the landing of the First Fleet, a group of over 1000 Aboriginal people gathered at Australia Hall in Sydney to call for full citizenship status and laws to improve the lives of First Nations people. As one of the first major civil rights gatherings in the world, this day became known as the Day of Mourning. Since then, National NAIDOC Week has grown to become both a commemoration of the first Day of Mourning as well as a celebration of the history, culture and excellence of First Nations people. National NAIDOC Week is observed annually from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday.
TIMELINE
From 1940 until 1955, the Day of Mourning was held annually on the Sunday before Australia Day and was known as Aborigines Day. In 1955, Aborigines Day was shifted to the first Sunday in July when it was decided that the day should also become a celebration of Aboriginal culture as well as a day of protest. Major Aboriginal organisations, as well as state and federal governments, all supported the formation of the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee (NADOC).
In 1974, for the first time, the NADOC committee was composed entirely of Aboriginal representatives. The following year, it was decided that NADOC be expanded to become a week of celebrations, from the first to the second Sunday in July.
In 1984, NADOC asked that National Aborigines Day be made a national public holiday to help celebrate and recognise the rich cultural history that makes Australia unique. While this has not happened (yet!), other groups have echoed the Committee’s call. As awareness of the distinct cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples grew, NADOC was expanded to recognise Torres Strait Islander people and culture. The committee then became known as the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC). The National NAIDOC Committee makes key decisions regarding national celebrations each year as stewards of National NAIDOC Week events on behalf of all First Nations people.
Senior Science with Mrs Brooks
During week 8, students from Years 3 - 6 started to explore the world of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics), and were introduced to a very useful little tool called Splat3D. This tool assists students in easily drawing a range of 3D shapes. With the knowledge of how to draw a cube, cylinder and circle cut out, students let their creative sides run wild, designing playgrounds, space stations and rocket ships, to name a few. Check out their amazing creations in the photos below.
Health & Safety Reminders
Safety in the Pick-Up Zone
As we near the end of the term, we again request that caregivers do not create an afternoon pick-up line through the middle of the carpark on Boxgrove Avenue. It is dangerous and we have the actual pick up zone for the purpose of ensuring everyone’s safety. If you are puting your child and other children at risk by misusing the carpark in this way, we beg you to reconsider. WSS is fortunate to have an off-road pick-up zone. We understand it is really busy from 2.30-2.50pm, but the leadership team staff the area until after 3.00pm and that is a great time time to arrive.
Primrose Park
A reminder that children going to Primrose Park, or any other local park, before or after school are the responsibility of their parents and caregivers. We recommend that children are supervised to provide support for any challenges that may arise.
Thank you for supporting our Wynnum SS community to remain safe.

Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Congratulations to our five Year 6 bookworms, Somhairle, Pepper, Ainsley, Harrison and Rowan, who represented Wynnum State School in the 2023 Readers’ Cup at Manly State School last Wednesday afternoon. Our Wynnum Warriors were magnificent representatives for our school on the night.
A very big thank you to the families of these students, who helped motivate and support their efforts in the lead up and on the night. Thank you Mrs Wendy Lakeman, for driving the Readers’ Cup at WSS, liaising with the organising committee in preparation for this event and being selected on the adjudication panel for the evening. We hope our Wynnum warriors continue to read widely and perhaps pursue the Readers’ Cup into their high school years. Well done again to everyone!
Another grateful thank you to the wonderful Wynnum families who donate their pre-loved and some brand-new books to our school. We have received many popular titles this term, a large number in mint condition, which have allowed us to process them quickly and put on our library shelves for borrowing.
Other important Library Matters…
As we head to the end of Term Two, can I ask all families to continue to regularly return books by their due date, in order for those books to be shared with students waiting eagerly to borrow for the holidays. If you are struggling to find your book, please let the library know and we can work out the next step before invoices are sent home early in Term Three.
Just keep reading…
(PS…don’t forget all the wonderful holiday happenings in our local Wynnum Library!!!)
Musical Notes with Ms Barnes (Performing Arts specialist teacher)
This term, our Year 4 and 5 instrumental students attended WAMM, an intensive instrumental music day camp! Wynnum State High School were wonderful enough to host instrumental music students from multiple schools, allowing them to spend a whole day learning how to work as a team. Throughout the course of the day, students learned how to play together, but more importantly, how to listen to each other. Families and friends were treated to a concert at the end of the day to show just how much our students learned.
A big thank you to Mr John Cosic and Mrs Vivienne Thomas for running the event, and for all the time and effort they put into our Instrumental Music program and Junior and Senior Bands. Another big thank you to Mr Tim Cooper, Head of the Wynnum State School Arts Department, for hosting such an incredible event.
Guidance Officer message with Mrs Manning
As we approach the end of another successful term, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for entrusting us with your child's education.
We value your support, dedication, and commitment to your child's education, and we are incredibly grateful for your partnership throughout the term. Your involvement in their education has been instrumental in creating a positive and nurturing environment for their learning, ensuring your child's growth and development, both academically and personally.

Enjoy the well-deserved break, spend quality time with your loved ones, and return next term with renewed energy and enthusiasm. We look forward to continue working together in shaping the bright future of our students.
Lost Property
At Wynnum SS we aim to minimise property losses and to return misplaced items to their rightful owners as efficiently as possible. There is a central collection point for lost property located in MEGA Central, where children and adults can look for missing items. Parents and students will be regularly encouraged through school newsletters and Facebook reminders to name and label all personal items including clothing, books and stationery. We ask that misplaced or lost items are brought to the lost property stand as soon as possible.
- Parents or students seeking lost items should check the lost property to claim items.
- Unclaimed but named items will be returned to their rightful owners every week after each clean-up of the lost property (distributed to class pigeon holes).
- Unclaimed and unnamed items will be displayed outside the Auditorium at the end of each term.
- Other unclaimed items will be disposed of appropriately by donating them to charity (e.g., St Vincent de Paul/ Salvos) at the end of each term.
Rugby League Term 2
Friday 9th June was the finale of the Interschool Sport and the Grand Finals for the Rugby League competition. Wynnum was represented in the finals by the Year 6, Year 4 and Girls teams.
Year 4’s played against Wondall and in an extremely close encounter and hard-fought game, Wondall scored on the buzzer to win 3-2 against our brave girls and boys.
The Girls' opponent was Wynnum West and as has been the case all season, the game went down to the wire and eventually the teams couldn’t be split, ending in a 3-3 draw.
Finally, the Year 6’s played against Wondall and the boys were able to save their best game until last, running away with a well-deserved 8-2 victory, finishing the season undefeated.
The rugby league Wynnum Warriors can hold their heads high and be immensely proud of a fantastic season. Special thanks to the coaches, Mr Lacey, Mr Greg Singleton, Mrs Corten and Miss Clark.
Interschool Sport – NETBALL
The last game of the netball season saw our Year 6A team go through undefeated into the Grand Final. They played Wondall and won 7-2. Congratulations on a wonderful season. A special mention to this team, who have taken home the winner’s trophy in grade 4, 5 and 6. What an outstanding effort from this skilled team. Congratulations to ALL the students in our seven netball teams from years 4 -6 who played, had fun, developed skills and learnt how to work as a team this season.

Reading @ Wynnum SS
The past few weeks 2CG and 6DS have got together for reading. Each student from 2CG had a year 6 reading buddy. The year 6 students read a book to their year 2 buddy and then they would swap. The students have connected and it has been such a positive experience for both year levels.
