Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
Keep up the momentum for change: the theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is Be a Voice for Generations. The theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
For the work of generations past, and the benefit of generations future, act today for a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all.
National Reconciliation Week – 27 May to 3 June – is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Student Council Initiative
We look forward to our Student Council's first event for 2023 this coming Wednesday, please read further on in the newsletter for more information regarding the National Simultaneous Story Time. The Speedy Sloth sounds like it is going to be an entertaining read and I look forward to seeing Wynnum Warriors wearing their 'lazy' clothes. Wonderful to see the gold coin donation for the day going towards Literacy and Reading materials.
PBL Survey Results...coming soon...
I look forward to sharing in the next newsletter the survey responses to the proposal to become a Positive Behaviour for Learning school. If you haven't yet provided your input, please vote via the following link
Teaching and Learning with Ms O'Donoghue (Head of Curriculum)
At Wynnum we use the Gradual Release model with our students. This is where we model lessons to our students, so they know exactly what is expected. The following lessons are guided lessons where the students have a go themselves with support from the teacher. Finally, students are given the opportunity to create their text on their own.
In the example below, we can see where the teacher has modelled the structure of an introduction, they worked together on the problem and solution. Students had to write the conclusion.
Opportunity is provided for all students to have a go at the task. Lessons are scaffolded for different levels of learning and templates are provided so that everyone can have success.
Library Matters with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Just under four weeks to go until our Year 6 Readers’ Cup team compete in the regional Bayside competition. Run by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, the competition is open to state and private schools and will be held on the 5 June at Manly State School. Primary schools may enter one team of five students, reading a pre-selected set of books suitable for their age group. They must compete with other schools to answer questions based on these books. Our team of five passionate Wynnum Warrior readers are, Somhairle, Pepper, Ainsley, Harrison and Rowan.
The competition challenges students to read widely, strive for accuracy, work interdependently, and continue developing their love of reading.
Mrs Lakeman – Readers’ Cup Coordinator
We can't wait for NSS 2023!
We will be celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday 24 May along with the rest of Australia, by reading ‘The Speedy Sloth,’ written by Rebecca Young, and illustrated by Heath McKenzie. There will be sloth craft and sloth fun hosted by our ‘student council’ throughout the day. Students will hear announcements at 1st and 2nd breaks to find out where and what to do.
Check out some of the previous children’s books throughout the 22 years of National Simultaneous Storytime:
How many of these titles have you read?
and just keep reading...

P-2 Science & Technology with Mrs Crowe
‘Hands On and Minds On’ investigations are vitally important for young children from Prep to Year Two. Using every sense throughout learning experiences provides very powerful stimulation for the brain. Strong connections are built in the brain enabling children to retain more of their learning.
The P-2 Science Lab is a weekly investigative “minds and hands on” interactive time that builds your child’s brain connections which in turn supports their learning in home class.
Year Two Wynnum Warrior Chemists mixed household liquids to create emulsions. All scientists were totally engaged in investigating, predicting and observing density experiments. Much ‘Questioning and Problem Solving’ occurred as substances were mixed. Students ‘Strived for Accuracy’ in their recordings of each experiment and displayed excellent bookwork.Did you realise that washing the dishes is a density experiment happening in your sink?
Preps recently investigated “waterproof or absorbent” as they observed a variety of materials being exposed to water. Our little scientists eagerly made predictions about which material would be ‘absorbent’ or ‘waterproof’.
Happy sounds of Wonderment and Awe were bouncing off the walls of the Science Lab as blue water was sprayed over their chosen items! Materials were matched to word cards ‘absorbent’ and ‘waterproof’ when tested in two ways. Very important for young scientists to use and see actual scientific words in print.
Friday 19 May is WORLD BEE DAY at WSS! Honey Tasting, investigating authentic bee keeping equipment, bee games, bee maths, ‘Minibeasts under Microscopes’, learning about how to sustain bees for our future and ‘Waggling for Bees’!
We need to protect our bees otherwise we have no FOOD! Students were invited to visit the Science Labs during both breaks to BEE AMAZED! Look out for Preps wearing BEEautiful hats too!

In other news, one of our year 6 students Rory Maclean competed in Western Australia in a week-long golf event. Rory had some fantastic results and won one of the coveted trophies earning his position in the ANZRI All Stars Team. This award is reserved for the best 14 players of the three days of Championship rounds. Rory's scores meant he earned his place in the team at #12. Rory will go down in the history of the ANZRI tournament (going since 1929) as the youngest player to achieve this accolade. What a fantastic achievement and more information below!
Students in years 4, 5 and 6 have been competing in Interschool Sport each Friday since week 1 of Term 2. There have been some fantastic results and coming into finals in a few weeks, we wish them all the best and to continue with their Wynnum Warrior sports spirit. A notable achievement from the netball teams, with year 6A being undefeated. Coach Karyn McGowan special mentions that Ciena W is showing great sportsmanship on and off the field- using her skillset, to make other shine on the court.
Student Council Pyjama Day (23/06)
Please help us reach our fundraising goal today so more kids in care can receive the support they desperately need.
Kids in care often bounce from home to home and to different schools which adversely affects their ability to learn and thrive. Without support, poor educational outcomes can lead to disengagement in school, mental health issues, unemployment in the future and poor life choices.
By donating to our fundraiser, you will help to change the life trajectory of a child.
Together, we can help to break the cycle of disadvantage experienced by kids in care through continuous stable support and nurturing relationships.
Money raised through this fundraiser will allow community mentors called “Pyjama Angels” to be recruited, screened, trained, and then matched with a child in care.
Together they read books, play educational games, do home-work and so much more. Most importantly, they empower children with learning, life skills and confidence to reach their full potential.
So this Pyjama Day June 23, we will be wearing our PJ’s and raising funds to support kids in care. You can play a part too, by donating today. Every bit counts!
Thank you for supporting our Pyjama Day fundraiser.

Rory M (Year 6) ANZRI Tournament
Rory has had an exceptional experience playing the courses in Western Australia for the ANZRI Golf Tournmanet . Day 3 - Joondalup - an amazing course, very difficult. One bunker is 15 metres deep. Rory Gross 93, Nett 77.coming 14th/70 in Gross and 4th/70 in B grade. great effort, not that he was happy at missing a few putts.
Day 4 - The Vines - Gross 88, Nett 71 Rory was 4/70 in Gross and 2nd/70 in Nett. Great effort.
Day 5 - Meadow Springs - Gross 93 Nett 77 - 29/70 in Gross and 14/70 in Nett

The Bold days above were the Championship rounds. At the end of the tournament various trophies are awarded. One of the coveted trophies is earning your position in the ANZRI All Stars Team - this is the best 14 players of the 3 days of Championship rounds.
Rory's scores meant he earned his place in the team at #12.
Rory will go down in the history of the ANZRI tournament (going since 1929) as the youngest player to achieve this accolade.
Rory brought his #12 cap and All Star medallion into school this week. The tournament has been great preparation for the Queensland Schools championship starting on the 21st May.
