Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
In 2023, we will continue to build our professional expertise on gaining educational achievement, wellbeing and engagement, and culture and inclusion as pillars of our commitment to equity and excellence.
Equity isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have. It is critical to understand the difference between equity and equality.
With equity in mind, staff celebrated International Women’s Day. While International Women's Day occurs on one day, we are committed to maintain a deep and continuous focus on equity, diversity and inclusion all year round. Through the process of equity, we can reach equality.
NAPLAN
This week, Year 3 and 5 students had a practice on the NAPLAN test online. It was a pleasure to be involved in both practice days. The practice test, known as the Omnibus Training Test, allowed students to experience what the NAPLAN test looks and sounds like in preparation for next week’s real testing. The students and staff did a fantastic job familiarising themselves with the test, the format and how to manipulate the online tools used in the numeracy section – the magic ruler!
I had to include a photo of Darcy, one of our beloved therapy dogs illustrating how relaxed students need to be doing NAPLAN. We’ve delivered a very calm message of just doing your very best by showing what you know and can do. I am confident that our Year 3 and 5 Warriors will do their very best starting next week when they complete the Conventions of Language, Writing, Reading and Numeracy tests. Just relax like Darcy!
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will be taking place on Wednesday 15 March in the Auditorium. Please take this wonderful opportunity to talk with your child’s teacher about their learning and progress over the course of this term.
At this interview, teachers will focus on your child’s progress so far and the next steps for improvement. They will reference essential elements about your child’s learning behaviours as well as inform you about their achievement this term. The ultimate aim is to galvanise a strong three-way partnership for the remainder of the year. Please see the item in this newsletter with how to lock in your time via the online booking procedure.

Teaching and Learning with Ms O'Donoghue (Head of Curriculum)
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
BOOK SWAP is still here!! We have placed a bookshelf near the office as you enter the school. These books are available for all students to choose from. Please feel free to take a book or two for home and return it to the book swap when you have read it. If it becomes a family favourite you can keep the book.
If you have any books at home that you would like to donate, there will be a container available for you to do so.
Please place your returned books in this container as well.
How to choose a book? Let your child find a book they are interested in. It may be a book they can read themselves or one that you can read to them. Sometimes it will be a book they are interested in just to look at the pictures.
Happy reading to you all.
What are Sight Words?
Sight word is a term used to describe words we know automatically when we look at them. Although some words may follow phonetic patterns, some are known as “tricky words” since parts of the word are irregular.
When our students are reading and we come across a sight word, we use the sounds we know and tell them the tricky part. For example, in ‘the’, the sound we know is ‘th’ and the tricky part is the ‘e’ which has an irregular sound.

P-2 Science & Technology with Mrs Crowe
Prep scientists were actively engaged in real life investigations about the needs of plants. Persistence and Problem Solving was needed to remove the weeds in the garden plot to create space, dig in hard soil to loosen it ready for planting, and place mulch for feeding their new plants. This process, and the final watering, was taken very seriously! All were very proud of their plantings of strawberry, tomato, basil and lettuce. Look at the dedication displayed in the facial expressions of our young botanists in these photos!
Did you know that the unique features of a living thing are adapted to its habitat for survival? This has been happening for millions of years. Dinosaurs fossils are evidence of this. Many plants in our modern-day environments, such as ferns and cycads, have been part of these habitats on our earth from the times of the dinosaur too!
Our Year One Palaeontologists have been investigating the habitats of herbivores by using magnifying glasses to investigate actual fossil ferns, and recording their own diagrams of ferns from our school gardens. They also created models of their chosen dinosaur displaying adaptive features (carnivore or herbivore teeth, claws, spikes, body size). Look at the amazing representations and the expressions of Wonderment and Awe in these photos!
World Science Festival Brisbane will be here from 22nd March- 2nd April. So many fantastic science events (free and ticketed) to be explored in our own city. Click the link below to see this year’s events and plan your family science adventure!

World Frog Day, Monday 20th March, happens during the same week. Remind your child to ‘jump’ in to explore the special display outside the P-2 Science Lab to ‘focus on frogs’!

If your child needs to take medication at school, please provide the office staff with:
- a completed and signed Consent to administer medication form;
- the medication in its original container; and
- medical authorisation (e.g. the pharmacy label, or a letter from the doctor, or a completed and signed health action plan).
