Principal's Message
Welcome back to Term 4.
I want to firstly acknowledge and thank Mrs Sonya Wilson for her leadership during the year as Acting Principal. I have experienced only positive interactions and have been pleased to receive a very warm Wynnum welcome.
It has been great to see so many smiles of children engaging back into the learning for this last term.
I’m sure the conversations at the end of the holidays may have been around whether we would return in lockdown. I am pleased to see us start off the term together and hope this continues as long as possible. Of course, if the chief health officer did make that call, not only will we be prepared to respond, but keep you fully briefed through our normal communication pathway to keep you up to date.
I have been reminded of my commitment I gave during a visit to a P&C meeting late last term about being available to be ‘slimed’ in order to promote our upcoming Colour Run. I intend to maintain this commitment and encourage all to support this great fundraiser for the school.
As I get to know more students, I also look forward to meeting many parents and community members throughout the term.
I’m also looking forward to playing a leading role in our collective efforts in the improvement of learning outcomes for all of our students to become intelligent citizens of today for tomorrow.
As an educator and leader of a number of schools, both in Australia and internationally, I am a firm believer in the notion of the village that raises the child, and feel privileged to lead this great school.
Mark Ionn
Principal
Habit of Mind and Loving Literature with Ms Connell
The Habit of Mind this fortnight is Thinking and Working Interdependently. This Habit is about developing our skills to work and learn from others. It is when we work together, learn together and take care of each other. This is a wonderful Habit to focus on as we come back together to finish the final term of 2021. The online book to bring this Habit to life is the book Dog vs Cat by Chris Gall. In this story, a dog and cat eventually learn how to be together happily despite some very significant differences. Enjoy!
School Colour Fun Run - Tuesday 12 October
The countdown is on for our colour explosion school fun run on Tuesday, 12 October! Less than a week to go! All funds raised will help us with the purchase of new laptops for the use of our students. Information was sent home to all families during the last week of term 3. If you have not yet registered follow the link below or check the Wynnum State School Parents and Citizens Association page on Facebook.
To incentivise our students to raise much needed funds, they will receive great prizes depending on the amount fundraised (order the prizes between 4-16/10).
Anyone who raises funds over $300 will be able to slime our new principal Mr Ionn or our deputy-principals, Mrs Megan Connell and Mrs Tanara Turvey! Any student raising funds over $150 will also be able to slime our volunteering teachers! The class that raises the most money will enjoy a pizza party! So keep on fundraising!
Please be reminded to return any cash donations before Friday 8/10/21.
Please make sure your child comes dressed to school in a WHITE shirt and brings some spare clothes (non-uniform preferred) to change into after the fun run. Shoes will get wet so alternative running shoes would be appreciated so as your child remains in school uniform on the following day. Students will be covered in non-toxic, biodegradable coloured powder from head to toe! A bag for wet items and a towel for drying off are also recommended.
Parents are most welcome to watch from the terraces on the oval, socially distanced and wearing face masks, at the following times:
Years 2 and 3 – 11:30-11:45am
Prep and Year 1 – 12:00-12:15pm
Year 4, 5 and 6 – 1:30-1:45pm
We are all looking forward to a day of colourful fun.

Library Buzz with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Term 4 is up and running and our library space is getting a makeover! During Term 3 the library team in consultation with Admin staff, discussed replacing some of our tired furniture and redesigning our library space, thinking about the needs of our learners and our school community. We know our school library is an important, exciting and welcoming space that makes positive impacts on teaching and learning in the school. Therefore, we had to consider a number of key learning spaces in our library environment to accommodate the students who enter our space from 8:30am to 5:50pm Monday to Friday. We considered that while libraries will always need a quiet space for students to reflect and read, we also needed to have a collaboration space for students and teachers to discuss, brainstorm, share and tell stories. We knew that many of our students came to the library to play, experiment and design so we had to continue to allow our makerspace available. Libraries are also about having a space for presenting and sharing around our interactive flat panels (BenQ). With all these key aspects to consider the library team have been able to work with our local supplier BFX to order some exciting, vibrant and flexible furniture. So, for now we wait patiently for our items to arrive over the next few weeks, as we know COVID may affect some delivery services.
Another surprise to share with you on arrival to school on Tuesday morning, was the installation of the new panels encasing our library patio area. This has taken some time to complete however it certainly was a WOW! seeing the new panels installed. We look forward to utilising this area once more.

Science News with Mrs Crowe
Our eager Prep-Year Three scientists were thoroughly engaged in the Term Three ‘Earth and Space Sciences’ culminating experiences during Week Ten.
Prep meteorologists were issued with their own ID badge to present their new knowledge about weather. Each young meteorologist individually presented their own ‘Weather Report’ while proudly wearing their weather hat. Enjoy the photos below!
Year One to Three scientists worked interdependently, in class groups throughout the week, to collect pieces of rubbish and record data from different areas of the school grounds for ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ (postponed from earlier in the year). It was wonderful to witness the wonderment and awe from our young environmental scientists as they discovered pieces of rubbish and eagerly collected every little tiny piece!
Term Four will be full of scientific questioning, problem solving, thinking flexibly and exercising persistence as each class explores the concepts of the Physical Sciences! The children will surely pose the most amazing questions and take their own learning to higher levels every time they visit the Science Lab as they explore the wonders of our physical world!
Prep: ‘On the Move’ (Physical movement of objects and body)
Year One: ‘Look, Listen’ (Sensing Light and Sound)
Year Two: ‘Push and Pull’ (Force and Gravity)
Year Three: ‘Heating Up’ (Heat Transfer)

Giggle Day with Wonderment and Awe
Heartfelt congratulations are in order for the whole Wynnum Warrior family for participating in Giggle Day on the last day of Term 3. Not only did the students and staff end the term with positivity, dressed up in crazy, amazing and entertaining outfits, but also managed to raise a grand total of $768 for a very worthy charity. Camp Quality is a cause close to our hearts and WSS has been a proud supporter since our opening. The Student Council would like to share their gratitude to every child who embraced the spirit of the day, every parent who planned, shopped and created the outfits, every teacher who dressed to impress (or giggle) and every person who donated to the charity. What a collective Wynnum Wow!

Extension and Enrichment
High Tea with Mrs Bennet and Mrs Lawrence
On September 10 , the students from the E&E High Tea group celebrated the end of the program by enjoying a culminating High Tea – The Wynnum Way. Students decorated and presented the room in High Tea fashion, with flowers, platters, napkins and bunting. The food that had been prepared and hand made over the last 8 weeks was on full show ready for a feast by all. We enjoyed all our yummy creations including sausage rolls, scones, party snacks, cupcakes and choc chip cookies, and of course a cup of hot tea. We had the pleasure of being joined by Mrs Sutton, Mrs Lentakis, Ms Sellars and Mrs Lakeman, who dressed the part and sampled our scrumptious delicacies. We were very grateful for their presence. After the event the students were presented with a personalised recipe book and a teacup of their very own to enjoy at home.
Champions for the Bay with Mrs Colledge
Maoritanga with Ms Medcalf
Maoritanga, the traditions and culture of the Maori. A most enjoyable time was had by all the children. Students immersed themselves in learning the haka and the poi. The poi represents insects and the flight of birds. Ti rakau (stick games) proved very tricky, the group had to practice hard as this consists of rhythmic throwing and catching of sticks from person to person. The Koru is often used in Maori art forms as a symbol of creation. It is based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond. The children were given the choice of drawing koru using contemporary colours, however all chose the traditional Maori colours of red, white and black.
Music with Mr Morgan
On Tuesday to Thursday in Week 9, Term 3 was WAMM camp a workshop to engage young musicians with learning their instruments. When we went to the advanced workshop at Wynnum state high school, we learnt about our instruments with the conductor, (Mr chambers). We played for two whole days to perform at the concert then on the Thursday with lots of parents the songs we performed were a dinosaur suite and NO BEARS ALLOWED!
