Principal's Message with Mr Ionn
The last fortnight has been a very busy time in the school. I have had the pleasure of attending many events and activities, as well as celebrating the success of Maths Team Challenge group, students participating in either Intermediate or Senior WAMM (Wynnum & Manly Music Workshop), and our Rugby League players to mention a few.
Year 4 Camp
On the beautiful outlook of Coolum Beach (see photo below), sits a true camp heaven, the Luther Heights Youth Camp. I had the great pleasure of spending the night and morning with our Year 4’s this week as they navigated their way through 2 days of awesome activities including: crate stacking, flying fox, catapult building, koala climb to name just a few. I know many students and staff returned exhausted from all of the hill walking associated with the activities, but very happy.
The camp reinforces the notion of students experiencing learning ‘out of school context’. Our Year 4 families would just be so proud of them and how they conducted themselves outside the structured environment of school.
Yesterday, over breakfast, staff commented not only on the quality of the camp and their staff, but how great Year 4 Warrior campers went about the activities, their manners and dispositions on camp. Of course, this would not have come together without the great organisation and planning of the Year 4 staff members. Well done all.
Quandamooka Camp
It was most pleasurable to join up with Kayla Rowlands-Broome and DJ Ertel (our two Year 6 representatives) for Principal's Day at the 2022 Quandamooka Jarjums Camp.
This year is the 16th anniversary of the Quandamooka Jarjums camp and it once again provided a unique cultural immersion program for all attendees. Both Kayla and DJ were outstanding in the group doing several dances, including dance representations of Mirrigimpa and Booangun.
Parent Teacher Interviews
I want to thank our teachers for being super organised at our recent parent teacher interviews. These events provide an important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their teachers. As this was our second go at this format, I did notice how quickly both parents and teachers got "into the moment", now that we are both more familiar with the process. Given the we had 328 interviews in one evening, it is testament to everyone playing their part in making this successful.
Happy Holidays
This is the last newsletter for Term 3. I will be taking leave for the first three weeks in Term to marry my beautiful partner Sonia and to go on our honeymoon. I would like to thank everyone for a great term and wish everyone a safe and happy end of term break.
In my absence, Ms Megan Connell will be Acting Principal, and behind her as Acting Deputy Principal, Mrs Donna Anderson.
The school is in very safe hands.
See everyone in Week 4, next term.
Kind regards,
Mark
Habits of Mind and Loving Literature Link with Ms Connell (DP Years 1-3)
The fortnight we focus on the Habit of Mind of Finding Humour. This Habit is important to develop because effective problem solvers think flexibly, find novel relationships, observe oddities in images, and make analogies. People who engage in humour can see situations from new vantage points or come up with the unexpected.
It seems that every time I search for a book to bring Finding Humour to life, I end up with a book from the Don’t Let the Pigeon… series and this fortnight is no exception. Follow the link below to hear Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late. Enjoy!

Literacy Challenge with Mrs Collingwood (DP Inclusion and Prep)
Congratulations Payton from 3MA!
Last week Payton competed in a literacy challenge held at Braille House. Braille House is an organisation that produces and provides braille and other tactile materials for people who are blind or have low vision. This was a very special day for Payton, as it is the opportunity for Braille using students to come together with their peers. Forty students from across QLD participated in challenges for reading and writing.
Payton finished second in the Reading category. Well done Payton!
Giggle Day 2022
Get Ready to Giggle!
Are you ready for a mountain of laughs on the last day of term? Giggle Day is your answer!
On Friday 16 September, students and staff are invited to attend school wearing fantastic, funky and fun outfits! Crazy coloured socks, hats, gloves, bow ties, anything that might make yourself or others giggle are in order.
A gold coin donation will assist Camp Quality to support children with their cancer journey and assist in providing their families with much needed support. Student Council members will be collecting donations at the front and back gates on the day. The following link, will allow you to donate online if you prefer.
https://fundraise.campquality.org.au/fundraisers/stephaniebennet/wynnum-state-school
At 9:00am, students will take part in a healthy walk around the oval to show off their outfits and enjoy some community time together as a whole school. Parents are more than welcome to dress up and join the walk or to spectate from the Terraces.
The Camp Quality Puppets will also be joining us throughout the day. They will present a free show to assist us to understand empathy, resilience and inclusivity for those affected by cancer. The Big Party caters for our Preps to Year 2. The Big Score is aimed at our upper primary students (Year 3 to Year 6). If you feel that this show will not be appropriate for your child, please email your child’s Homeroom teacher to opt out. If you are unsure, please check out the Camp Quality Information Flyer or their Website for more information. Supervision, and a little fun, will be provided for your child while the show is on, if you choose this opt out option.
Remember… that laughter is the best medicine.
Kind regards

Enrichment and Extension (E&E) 2022
E&E lists will go up on Thursday morning after 9am. This is where Years 3-6 students will see which of their four preferences they have received and who else is going to be in the same activity. This is is a very exciting next step in the Term 4 E&E adventure!
Science News with Mrs Crowe (Prep-3 Science Specialist)
Our Year Three astronomers displayed Wonderment and Awe during investigations of ‘Shadows around our School’. Each scientist Gathered data through all Senses while observing a range of different shadows.
All were instructed to Strive for Accuracy recording observations in their Science Journals. Next week these scientists will actively observe how the sun and shadows combine to have the time of day appear on their sundial shadow clock!
Prep meteorologists absolutely loved planning and presenting their ‘Weather Reports’ this week. Every ‘Weather Reporter’ wore their Weather hat and used their plan to report on their favourite weather in front of the class.
Each scientist wrote their weather word, drew an exact diagram of the symbol and represented what they would wear or do during that weather. Every Prep Strived for Accuracy as they carefully completed and presented their plan.
Did you know it is ‘Electricity Safety Week’! During the last two weeks of term P-3 Science classes will engage in interactive learning, to remind about the properties of electricity, it’s purpose and the extreme need for safety when using it. Every young scientist will investigate an electrical circuit, use interactive learning resources and follow up their learning with posters promoting discussion and reflection tasks.
Please make use of the links here if you wish to engage in ‘Electricity and Safety’ learning at home. Many informative videos for you to discuss at home together, and fun explorative learning activities to enjoy. The ‘Social Stories’ link is particularly useful to assist children with special needs on how to be very safe around electricity, in an easy to understand way.

Library Buzz with Mrs Sutton and the Library Team
Well Book Week was certainly a time to celebrate our favourite characters, from enduring classics to some very popular titles. Please enjoy some of the many photos from our Book Week Dress Up walk around the oval. What a wonderful sight to see our school community come together and celebrate books. I will admit I had a tear in my eye as I viewed the vista of so many happy, colourful students dressed to impress! Well done Wynnum Warriors.
A big thank you to our Book Week Butterfly Mascots who availed themselves most days over the last weeks to fluttering around our library and play areas promoting and encouraging students to simply enjoy reading books.
Book Returns - As we head into our last week of term, can I ask all families to continue to regularly return books by their due date. Ms Sellars will be shortly sending our emails to families with overdue books. Those families who have notified us of lost library books for this term will be invoiced for the cost of the book. Accounting for all books throughout the school is a huge operation therefore we ask for your assistance in monitoring your child’s library books.
Maths Team Challenge with Mrs Bennet
Six students from Year 5 and 6 have been selected and trained to attend the 2022 Maths Team Challenge at Kingston State School on Wed 7th September. Leila, Jaxon, James, Caleb, Oskar and Andy will be attending the ½ day event and participate in the Teams Event and the Relay Event completing challenging maths tasks. They will work against other schools in the Brisbane area and are looking forward to an awesome day. We wish them all the best for this academic and exciting event.
Teaching and Learning with Ms O'Donoghue (Head of Curriculum)
Persuasive Writing
Have you ever been hanging out with a group of friends and suddenly decided you all wanted to go grab dinner? Trouble is, you're all in the mood for different kinds of food. One person wants pizza, another wants burgers, and you really, really want Chinese. Someone has to step up and convince the others, and you decide that person is you. But, if you want to succeed, you're going to have to really persuade your friends that Chinese food is the best choice.
This concept of persuasion works the same way in writing as it does in casual conversation. Authors use persuasive writing to change the minds of their audience about a specific topic. Persuasive writing is a type of non-fiction writing used to convince the reader to agree with the author about an issue. The author will rely heavily on facts to express their opinion and use them in an argumentative type of writing style.
At Wynnum our students study persuasive writing one term of the year. Our Year 2s are currently comparing two texts and choosing the one they liked the best with some good reasons to support their argument. Here are some examples below.
ICAS Results Access
Parents: Looking for ICAS results?
Now that your child has sat their ICAS test, we realise how keen you are to see how they went. Once your child sits their test, your school typically receives your child’s online results for that subject 4 to 6 days after the final sitting day for the subject. Your school then receives your child’s certificate/s approximately 14 days later. Once your school has processed the results, it will then pass on your login details, giving you access to the online results and certificates.
Your login details will be printed on the back of student certificates. The certificates will be distributed to students as soon as the school has received them.

Rugby & Touch Results with Mr Singleton
Rugby League
The rugby league students at Wynnum State School recently had success at the Metropolitan East Rugby League Shield. After winning the Patron’s Trophy on the Friday evening back in June, both the U10’s and U12’s progressed through to this competition, that includes the winning primary schools from the Met East region and a few invited private schools. This year included the best teams from Logan, Redlands with Iona and St Laurie’s. The U10’s successfully won the competition on Wednesday 3rd August then the U12’s won the competition on Thursday 11th August. This means that both teams are now back-to-back champions after winning last year in its inaugural year. Also, this year’s winners will now represent Met East at the very first South East Qld Regional Championships, to compete against the winning Met West, Met North, South Coast, Sunshine Coast and Darling Downs schools, on Friday 9th September.
Touch Football
On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September, two boys and two girls Wynnum State School teams competed in the first touch football competition for the season. All teams played 3 games each on Saturday to qualify for Sunday’s finals. The senior girls (4th) won all three games, with the junior girls (7th) winning two of their three games and both teams qualifying in the top 10 out of 22 teams. The senior boys (4th) also won their 3 games on Saturday and the junior boys (13th) winning one of their three. This qualified the senior boys in the top 12 and the junior boys tp of division two. On Sunday, the competition was more intense and each team still played three games. The tougher competition was great experience for upcoming tournaments and with all teams having some wins along with a few close loses, the weekend was still a tremendous success. Especially for the junior boys, who won the Division 2 final. So, each teams improvement from their first game on Saturday through the three games on Sunday was visible for all to see and will hold them in good stead heading into our tournament next Friday and the two competitions in term 4.
Work Out Week
The Student Council held a magnificent physical event in Week 5 and 6 called Work Out Week. This event encouraged students to participate in activities to prepare themselves for the Sports Day. It was a huge success! The year level that won with 2952 points was Year 2. We would like to congratulate all the students that participated in this event. The winning house, with a whopping 4351 point was Mirrigimpa. Thank you to all the students that joined in and earned points for their team.
P & C News
Trivia night
The P&C would like to thank everyone who supported, volunteered at, and participated at the 2022 Wynnum State School Trivia Night! Considering the relatively short lead up time and, and River Fire as a competitor the event did extremely well with 12 tables booked and approximately $3,000 raised. The P&C would like to thank everyone who supported the event, and especially acknowledge:
- Our amazing sponsors, especially the local businesses. A huge part of the revenue raised was through the cent auctions (for donated prizes) and plenty of fun was had through the lucky door prizes and best dressed competition.
- Brian and Lee Cargill for holding the fort at the bar all night!
- Danielle Westport and her family who went above and beyond to support the event in multiple ways - hosting a table, decorating the auditorium and being an outstanding Trivia Host!
- The P&C Exec Team - almost all of whom put a table together (or manned the bar) and helped make the event so successful.
- Angus Gorrie for pulling the event together.
- All of our other amazing parents and teachers who put tables together or bravely filled in gaps on tables!
We are elated at the event's success and already talking about themes and improvements for next year!
Next P&C Meeting
The next P&C meeting will be held at 7pm on Thursday 15 September 2022 in the Outside School Hours Care room. This room caters for having online options for joining the meeting.
All P&C members should receive an email with the Teams link on the Monday prior to the meeting. We have experienced a glitch where some members did not receive the link, however this should now be resolved. If you are not a member and would like to attend, please get in touch at wynnumss.pandc@gmail.com

National Police Remembrance Day from Bayside Crime Prevention
National Police Remembrance Day (NPRD) is commemorated each year on September 29. It is a day when police and the public remember those who have paid the supreme sacrifice as police officers.
It is a day for police officers (past and present) and the community to ‘remember our fallen police’. To date, nearly 800 Australian police officers have lost their lives protecting the community in the execution of their duty. This includes 148 Queensland Police Officers. In Brisbane City, there is an intimate Candlelight Vigil held on 28 September for the families to honour their loved ones. Our Brisbane City service on 29 September is preceded by a march down George Street and followed by a service at the Police Memorial in the Botanical Gardens, where the public are encouraged to attend.
We encourage our families to help commemorate this day and remember those that have fallen and reflect on their sacrifice to keep us safe.
